Germany against Northern Ireland: programs, statistics and overview

Overview of the match for Germany against Northern Ireland
Thursday evening, the surprise capitulation of Germany in Slovakia means that the pressure increased before the visit of Northern Ireland tomorrow.
The 2-0 reverse in Bratislava – their very first defeat outside in a qualifier of the World Cup – caused many criticisms of experts and former players.
Bastian Schweinsteiger said that Germany had “lost their DNA” – the ability to win without playing well – and even the boss Julian Nagelsmann questioned the team’s lack of passion.
Although this is the group’s first match, there is now little room for the error for the quadruple world champions if they want to qualify directly for the centerpiece of next summer in the United States, Mexico and Canada and avoid the playoffs.
With only five games to play in group A, the visit to Northern Ireland must now win.
And Nagelsmann expects much more from his team in Cologne.
He said: “I have confidence in the team. We have to approach the game as a semi-final of the Champions League. Otherwise, we will play the playoffs in March. I have confidence in the team, but everyone must realize that it is not enough to play with the handbrake.
“The players have spoken. I think they feel what is necessary now. The whole group must wear energy. If we seem more energetically than today (against Slovakia), it will be a better match on Sunday.”
Northern Ireland of Michael O’Neill is in a much better position after their 3-1 victory in Luxembourg and will go to Cologne in floating mood.
In a realistic way, they would have best targeted second place, then their risk in the play-offs. But any type of result tomorrow would place them in the conversation for the group’s winners.
However, O’Neill is waiting for a backlash from the local team.
“The message to the players when they met last Sunday, if we go home with three points, it will be a good trip,” said O’Neill. “But if we go home with more than that, it will be a big trip. We are fortunate to make it an excellent trip now.
“We know that there will be a reaction from Germany to this result.
“I am sure they will be underlying and criticized in their own country. Maybe they are in a weak moment.
“I have played against Germany several times when they were world champions.
“I do not think that this team is completely at this level at that time, but they have excellent players and like all the German teams, they will have a reaction to this result and we must be ready for this.”
Team news for Germany against Northern Ireland
Nagelsmann suggested that he would not bring major changes, but he could choose to add more bite to his team after seeing a little light against Slovakia. This could mean reminders for Leon Goretzka and Niclas Fullkrug.
O’Neill did not report any new injury after the Luxembourg match and could again call on Conor Bradley and Paddy McNair, who both obtained precious minutes under their belt on Thursday.
Dan Ballard, Pierce Charles, Brodie Spencer and Paul Smyth did not make the team due to an injury.
