Fintrac fines Saskatchewan Indian Gaming Authority after compliance investigation

The Canada Financial Transactions and Reports Analysis Center (FINTRAC) announced on September 12 that the Saskatchewan Indian Gaming Authority (SIGA) faced a fine of $ 1,175,000. This occurs after Siga does not comply with the anti-money laundering policies after an investigation.
Fintrac noted that Siga had not acted on suspicious transactions, did not report these transactions and failed to develop compliance procedures.

“The Canada Anti-White and Anti-Terrorist Funding Plan is in place to protect the security of Canadians and Canada’s economy security,” said Sarah Paquet, director and chief executive officer of Fintrac.
“Fintrac works with companies to help them understand and respect their obligations under the law. We are also firm to ensure that companies continue to do their share and we will take the appropriate measures when necessary. ”
The importance of fine compliance
Siga operates seven casinos in the province of Saskatchewan. Casinos, financial entities, monetary service companies, real estate brokers and various other commercial sectors in Canada are required under the product of the offense (money laundering) and the terrorist financing law to keep certain files, identify customers, maintain a compliance regime and report certain financial transactions in Fintrac. In this case, it was found that Siga had not joined these directives.
During the year 2024/25, Fintrac issued 23 opinions of violation of non-compliance with companies, the greatest number in one year in the history of the organization. These fines represented a total of more than $ 25 million.
Siga announced that it intended to appeal from Fintrac’s decision, arguing that they work with various regulatory organizations and maintain a high standard in its operations.
“Siga does not agree with the violations found by Fintrac, and it does not agree with the administrative sanctions evaluated,” said the organization. “Siga will use both the conclusion of violations and the sanctions evaluated at the Federal Court.”
