A photograph of an altered wood panel, centered in the frame, displaying the text "Illinois" in daring and white capital letters. The sign has a slightly distressed appearance with visible grains and minor scratches, suggesting years of exposure to elements, and is fixed at a robust and rusty metal pole. Behind the sign is a blurred view of a golden wheat field under a light blue sky, creating a feeling of rural tranquility. Sweet sunlight lights up the sign, throwing subtle shadows and highlighting the texture of wood.

Illinois Gaming Board (IGB) has announced the ban on advertising on university campuses, as well as expansion of existing restrictions on advertising, marketing and promotions for casino operators, video games and sports betting.

The new rules have been adopted by the Regulatory Council, these, in particular advertisements which are not placed in places where they are likely to be seen by minor or vulnerable persons.

Operators must now also maintain advertising records and include leading, primary advertising, marketing and promotions game messages.

“By adopting these measures, the IGB is based on existing regulations to implement additional guarantees and standards that still protect the public and encourage responsible gaming habits,” said Illinois Gaming Board administrator Marcus D. Fruchter.

“These regulations provide for clear, coherent, ethical and transparent advertising and marketing directives for all casino, video games and sports betting under the IGB jurisdiction.”

What changes did the Illinois game board have brought to advertising rules?

This repression against the rules was announced via a press release on August 4, these changes are now effective. This follows a public opinion and a period of comments, as well as the approval of the joint committee of the administrative rules of the General Assembly of Illinois (JCAR) which took place on May 13, 2025.

Other changes include the ban on publishing, broadcast, disseminated, displayed or distributed promotions or promotions on any university or university campus, or university media, such as university or university newspapers.

There must also be the retention of copies of all advertising and marketing media, including a journal of when and how these materials have been published, broadcast, displayed or distributed.

Operators must also give customers the possibility of unsubscribing or withdrawing from advertising, marketing or promotional equipment. This request must be respected as soon as possible.

The problematic game text, determined by the Illinois Ministry of Social Services, must also be included in all advertising and marketing media.
