Meta’s Ray -Bans are back with a new generation, and this time they finally give people the only thing they really want – a screen. During the Meta Connect Developer annual conference, the company officially took the wraps of its Meta-Ray-Ban display, which, as its name suggests, its first pair of intelligent glasses infused in AI to be accompanied by a color display in color in color.

Intelligent glasses, which still wear the same Ray-Ban brand, will cost $ 799 and will be available for pre-order today. As you can expect, they can do a lot of things that their predecessor cannot, including messages of messages, rotating navigation and tell you when the requests to Meta Ai treat. There are several integration of applications, including WhatsApp and Instagram, allowing you to watch coils and make video calls natively in glasses. A major upgrade on message notifications is that the meta-ray-ban display will not be limited to WhatsApp only, which means that it can display notifications on iOS and Android devices.

This is not the only major change in this generation. Meta says that her very first display has a resolution of 600 x 600 and a field of vision at 20 degrees. The display is monocular, which means that it is only in a lens – in the lower right corner – and has a refresh rate of 90 Hz. The brightness goes to 5,000 nits and as low as 30 nits, which makes them usable outside in light. One of the coolest parts of the screen is that Meta claims that there is less than 2% light leakage, which means that you cannot see when someone has its activated display.

Speaking of light leakage, all Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses will be delivered with transition lenses. On the one hand, it looks like a strange choice, but this is also logical because it is a gadget that you will want to use inside as well as for $ 800, you should be able to use them as long as you wish without having to remove them. “As long as you wish”, in this case, will not exceed 6 hours, according to Meta, which is much longer than what I expected. This solid lifespan is partly thanks to what Meta calls “Ultra-Narrow Steelcan batteries”. I would like to know exactly what it meant, but for the moment, I can only expect a deeper dive in the future.

The glasses are only half of the attraction of the Meta Ray-Ban screen. The other half is its SEMG bracelet you use to control the user interface in glasses.

The gang of neural meta, as Meta calls it, is undoubtedly the most innovative part of its new Ray-Ban package, because no other product as it exists on a commercial scale. Apart from being a first, it also offers a potential solution to a problem that no other manufacturer of smart glasses has solved – this problem being, how do you really use smart glasses? While most intelligent glasses (the first generation first-generation rays inclusive) have a vocal assistant for scrub controls like “take a photo” and a fairly simple touch bar for physical entries (that is to say a break / game), none is ideal in each situation.

The fact is that adding a screen complicates smart glasses – the more you can do it, the more you will have to transmit to your glasses, and to do this, you need a input system as nuanced as the glasses itself. Not only that, but if you want to use your smart glasses discreetly (or normal at all, really), shouting in a crowded metro car is far from ideal. With the neuronal band, however, you can discreetly navigate the user interface by pinching, sliding and typing on various menus in smart glasses. My favorite gesture is a pinch to zoom in to take photos and videos. It is the pro-esque vision, but everything without cameras. In case you are wondering, yes, the neurons band is included in this cost of $ 800.

I was fortunate to use Meta’s rays and its new neuronal group, and you can read my full impressions here.

Like the previous iterations of Meta’s Ray-Ban glasses, this year will also be equipped with cameras and speakers. Regarding the camera, Meta goes with an ultra-large 12-megapixel sensor which can also capture 1080p at 30 IPS in a resolution of 1,440 x 1,920. There is also a 3X digital zoom.

The camera is also used for computer vision in glasses, alias Meta AI. Despite being a fan of meta shelves (they are the only device I want to take calls), Meta Ai was a weak point for me. While the voice assistant works well most of the time for basic stuff such as taking photos / videos, playing Spotify and asking what is the lifespan of your battery, the lifting of the heavier AI is at best affected. If Meta’s new smart glasses fate is to be seen because I have not had the chance to use them, but I hope an upgrade here.

But even if the AI is still capricious and the cameras and the audio are almost the same, these smart glasses always have a scary screen. It is a big step forward, even if the functionality is limited for the moment. When people ask me questions about my first generation shelves, the first thing they want to know is whether they have a display in them, and they are inevitably very disappointed when I have to drop them. Now, I will actually have something to show them, and if the meta bracelet works, I will even have something to show them that only Meta can provide.
