The American judge orders the deportation of the Palestinian activist Mahmoud Khalil

In the United States, an immigration judge ordered the expulsion of the pro-Palestinian activist Mahmoud Khalil in Algeria or Syria, due to the claim of information from a green card request.

Judge Jamee Comans, based in Louisiana, said that Mr. Khalil “had deliberately distorted material facts for the sole purpose of bypassing the immigration process”.

In a statement to the American American Liberties Union, Mr. Khalil said: “It is not surprising that the Trump administration continues to retaliate against me for my exercise of freedom of expression.”

Mr. Khalil, an American permanent resident of Palestinian origin, was a leading figure during demonstrations of the Gaza War in 2024 at the University of Columbia, where he studied.

The lawyers of Mr. Khalil, 30, said that they would appeal the decision and added that separate ordinances of the Federal Court remained in fact which prohibit the government from deporting or holding it.

In March, immigration officials and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrested Mr. Khalil in the repression of the Trump administration against universities which, according to him, failed to fight against anti -Semitism.

Mr. Khalil, born in Syria and citizen of Algeria, was detained in an immigration establishment in Louisiana for three months before a federal judge judged that he was neither a risk of flight nor a threat to his community.

On June 20, the judge ruled that Mr. Khalil should be released.

Although detained, Mr. Khalil’s wife, an American citizen, gave birth to their son.

In March, the US government also accused Mr. Khalil of having left details on his previous associations on immigration documentation, including membership in UNDA – the United Nations agency working with Palestinians – and “continuous employment” at the British Embassy in Beirut.

Responding to the recent decision, Mr. Khalil added: “When their first efforts to deport me had to fail, they used the manufacture of baseless and ridiculous allegations in order to be silent for having spoke and stand firmly with Palestine, demanding the end of the current genocide.”

In June, Mr. Khalil’s lawyers made a complaint for $ 20 million (14.7 million pounds sterling) in damages alleging false imprisonment, malicious prosecutions and males as an anti-Semitic.

Trump has repeatedly said that pro-Palestinian activists, including Mr. Khalil, support Hamas, a group appointed a terrorist organization in the United States. The President maintains that these demonstrators should be expelled and called the arrest of Mr. Khalil “the first to come.”

The role of Mr. Khalil in Columbia demonstrations in 2024 placed it in the public’s eyes. On the front line of negotiations, he played a role in mediation between university officials and activists and students who attended the demonstrations.

Activists supporting Israel accused Mr. Khalil of being an apartheid leader of the University of Columbia (CUAD), a group of students who demanded, among other things, the university to depart from its financial links with Israel and a cease-fire in Gaza.

Mr. Khalil denied having directed the group, telling the Associated Press (AP) that he only served as spokespersons for the University’s demonstrators and mediator.
