Former Justice Minister David Lametti appointed Canada Ambassador

Prime Minister Mark Carney officially appointed David Lametti as the next Canadian ambassador to the United Nations.

“The new government of Canada has the mandate to strengthen and diversify our international partnerships, based on leaders in principle and effective to represent the value of Canada’s strength in a world in rapid transformation,” Carney said in a statement announcing the appointment on Thursday.

CBC News First broke the story On Wednesday, the former Minister of Justice left the Prime Minister’s office and was considered a diplomatic role.

The former liberal deputy had been Minister of Justice under Prime Minister Justin Trudeau from 2019 to 2023. He resigned from Parliament in 2024.

Lametti had been Carney’s main secretary in recent months, and the two have played hockey together at the University of Oxford.

Lametti will replace the outgoing United Nations representative of Canada, Bob Rae, on November 17.

Rae congratulated Lametti in an article on social networks and said he had spoken to Carney earlier this summer to leave his post.

Carney also announced the appointment of Vera Alexander as the next Canada Ambassador to Germany. The career official will replace John Horgan who died last year.
