The European Association of Games and Paris (EGBA) has sent a new press release which “urges” those responsible to vote yes on a historic vote which could help harmful behaviors around the game.

The “standard for harm markers” is an initiative in progress since 2022, between the EGBA and the European Committee for Standardization (CEN). With the prejudice markers in place, it would analyze a more granular level to eliminate harmful tactics from online games, as well as “allow early intervention and prevention of harms”.

The markers that the EGBA wishes to monitor are changes in speed, time and duration of play. These are all data that can help clarify the interventions if a risk is presented for the player.

In the press release, the EGBA declares that they have already obtained the support of other organs around the EU. This includes the European Game Regulations (GREF) forum. Other people who support this decision include “academics, game regulators, operators, harm prevention professionals and other key stakeholders”.

The secretary general of the EGBA speaks to the vote

Speaking in the press release, Maarten Haijer, secretary general of the EGBA, said:

“Voting represents a marked moment for the more safe game in Europe.

“This initiative proposed by EGBA precisely demonstrates the type of collaboration we need – bringing together stakeholders to share knowledge and experiences to create something for the common good.

“We call on national delegates to approve the important standard, which will contribute to a better understanding of the problem of problematic play and supports the prevention of more effective harm across Europe.”

It is now on the delegates involved in the success of the idea, which, if it were to be finalized, it is expected that Cen will launch it in early 2026. EGBA ensures that the follow -up of telemetry will be optional, it would therefore be up to operators to integrate the standard into their business.
