Estonia summoned a Russian diplomat to protest after three Russian fighter planes entered its airspace without authorization on Friday and stayed there for 12 minutes, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

The apparent foray occurs a little more than a week after NATO planes have shot down Russian drones in Poland and an increased fear that the war in Ukraine could spread.

The Minister of Estonian Affairs Margus Tsahkna said that Russia has already violated the country’s air space four times this year, “but today’s foray, involving three fighter planes entering our air space, is unprecedented.”

Estonia has decided to request consultations with article 4 of NATO on the violation of its air space, Prime Minister Kristen Michal wrote on Friday.

Article 4 allows NATO countries to hold consultations with allies when they believe that their territorial integrity, their political independence or their security are threatened.

Russian officials did not immediately comment.

The violation of Poland’s airspace by Russia was the most serious cross -border incident in a member country of NATO since the war in Ukraine began with the total invasion of Russia in February 2022.

Other alliance countries have reported similar incursions and drone accidents on their territory.

Poland says that it has shot down several Russian drones in its airspace, the first time that a NATO country is known to have drawn directly from Russia since its invasion of Ukraine. Italian jets scrambled in response

The head of the European Union foreign policy, Kaja Kallas, former Prime Minister of Estonia, called on Friday foray “an extremely dangerous provocation” which “still degenerates tensions in the region”.

Estonia, as well as other Baltic States, Lithuania and Latvia, is considered to be among the most likely targets if Russia one day decides to risk an attack on NATO.

Russian MIG-31 fighters entered the Estonian airspace in the region of the island of Vaindloo, which is a small island in the Gulf of Finland in the Baltic Sea, the Estonian army said in a separate press release.

The plane had no flight plans and their transponders were deactivated, according to the press release, and planes were not double -meaning radio communication planes with Estonian air traffic services.

The Italian Air Force F-35 fighter planes, currently deployed as part of the NATO Baltic Air police mission, replied to the incident, the statement said.

“The increasingly extensive tests of Russia of borders and increasing aggressiveness must be welcomed by a rapid increase in political and economic pressures,” said Tsahkna, the Minister of Foreign Affairs. The Russian business accusation was convened and received a protest note, a statement from the ministry said.

The EU says that it will end up Russian imports of LNG earlier

Developments have increasingly shaken European governments, because efforts to arrest war in Ukraine had no dynamism after a burst of diplomatic talks who understood US President Donald Trump organizing Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on August 15, and a “coalition led by Europe of the will” post-alcoholic.

Analysts say that Putin thinks that he can survive the political commitment of the Western partners of Ukraine and win a prolonged war war by carrying the army of Ukraine with a pure weight of figures.

The war continued tirelessly for more than 3 and a half years since Russia invaded its neighbor. Ukraine has accepted proposals for ceasefire and a meeting at the top, but Moscow dismantled.

Ukraine, for its part, rushes to extend its defense cooperation with other countries and secure billions of dollars in investment in its national weapons industry.

Trump said Thursday during a state visit to the United Kingdom that Putin really dropped me “in peace efforts. But at other times, the American president seemed to blame Ukraine for inviting the invasion, and last week targeted members of NATO Alliance who bought Russian energy.

The European Union plans to prohibit Russian LNG imports in the block a year earlier than planned as part of a 19th package of sanctions against Moscow, EU officials said a change of Trump on Friday.

“The income of fossil fuels support the Russian war economy. We want to reduce these income,” said the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, when she announced the proposal, which requires the unanimous approval of the EU governments.

“It’s time to deactivate the tap,” added Von Der Leyen.

Beyond LNG, or liquefied natural gas, the proposed sanctions would also target more of the fleet and cryptocurrency of the shadow of the shadow of Russia.

Von der Leyen and Kallas did not give all the details of the new package, but the officials said that he would seek to neutralize a customs escape used by Moscow to import double -use goods for his soldiers.

“We are now looking for those who feed the war of Russia, who buy oil in violation of sanctions,” said Von Der Leyen. “We target refineries, petroleum merchants, petrochemical companies in third countries, including China.”

The proposal is likely to convince EU countries to cover any deficit in LNG supplies thanks to purchases from the United States, increasing its energy dependence on the United States in the era when Washington uses trade rates as a political tool.

The share of Russia in IMP imports from the EU in LNG decreased 14% in the second quarter of 2025, against 22% in the first quarter of 2021, according to Eurostat. Spain, Belgium, the Netherlands and France imported the Russian LNG. Gas has been the subject of Turkstream in Slovakia, Hungary and Bulgaria.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said on Wednesday that any EU proposal to eliminate Russian energy faster would not affect Russia and would not force him to change his position.
