Donald Trump said Japan would accept imports from the huge Ford F-150 van, in the last sign that the two countries disagree in their understanding of a trade agreement announced last month.

His comments came while Tokyo’s best negotiator went to Washington to put pressure on Trump administration to follow a commitment to reduce prices on cars and car parts to 15% compared to current paralyzes by 27.5%.

“They take our cars,” said Trump about Japan in a telephone interview broadcast by CNBC on Tuesday. “They take the very beautiful Ford F-150, which is very good. And I’m sure we will do it very well and other things that are doing very well here, will also do it. ”

Confusion weighs on various details of a trade agreement concluded between the United States and Japan, causing a concern in Japan about its application, in particular with regard to cars. The rhetoric of the Trump administration on commercial transactions has often shown differences with its partners, casting doubt on their viability.

“There are all kinds of debates on the prices, but we have entered into an agreement,” Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba said at a press conference in Hiroshima on Wednesday. “As the US government representatives involved in previous trade negotiations in the United States-Japan said, it is much more difficult to implement the agreement than to agree on this.”

The American automotive rates on Japan are now set at 27.5% – a combination of a previous rate of 2.5% and a new 25% applied by Trump. Although a 15% drop would decrease, this rate would always have an impact on a sector that has long been a pillar of the Japanese economy.

“It should be noted that the US-UK agreement took 54 days to be implemented,” Japanese negotiator Ryosei Akazawa told the journalists when he was asked about the lowering of car rates after his arrival in Washington on Wednesday morning, Japan.

Asian markets hoped that Akazawa’s ninth visit to the United States would selify the promise on lower automobile rates, the Japan Topix index increasing 1% at the back of car manufacturers, including Toyota Motor Corp.

Another question is whether the 15% tariff between the 15% edge is stacked in addition to the existing rates or if all current withdrawals will be standardized at 15%, in another potential divergence from the United States and Japan understanding of the trade agreement.

Although Wazawa said that the withdrawals would be reduced to 15% rather than added in addition to current prices, an executive decree published last week said that the 15% drop only applied to the European Union and would not be implemented for Japan.

“There are many details involved in this rate rate, so we seek to discuss these points in detail,” added Akazawa.

While Trump has long deplored the fact that American cars are unpopular in Japan, most experts are suitable that this is due to the lack of vehicles adapted to the market, rather than obstacles to trade.

The Ford F-150 that Trump mentioned in the interview is more than two meters wide, even without mirrors, probably limiting its usefulness on Japanese roads, many of which measure less than four meters wide for two automobile lanes, according to government data published in 2012.

In the same interview with CNBC, Trump qualified the investment pack as $ 550 billion in Japan in the trade agreement a “signature bonus” a bit like that of a baseball player.

“I got a signing bonus from Japan of $ 550 billion. This is our money. This is our money to invest as we want,” he said.

The Japanese party said that only 1% to 2% of the overall amount will be a real investment, the rest being loans and loan guarantees. Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba
