Good morning. Summer in the city is the ideal time to talk about garbage. The sanitation strikes that have deepened during this period of the year and the smells emanating from outdoor trash cans remind us that the United States is one of the largest producers of waste in the world, the Americans generating around 951 kilograms (2,100 pounds) of solid municipal waste per person per person.

The company which manages approximately a third of this trash is WM, the giant of 24 billion dollars per year, otherwise known as Waste Management. These are the operating transfer stations of the dominant players, landfill sites, recycling factories and landfill projects. In the episode of this week of FortuneThe Podcast Next Podcast, CEO, Jim Fish, talks about aligning the brand around sustainability. “It’s profitable for us,” he said, noting that the decomposition of garbage produces natural gas that feeds WM garbage trucks, among others.

He also talks about the transforming role of technology in the creation of safer trucks, and Ergo, fewer people are needed in roles that can have 50% of rolling rates. “I was there once when he was below zero at the back of a truck, climbing on snow-snow. Your hands are cold; It’s difficult work, ”he says. “The most dangerous place in these trucks is when you are outside them.”

While Fish says that his philosophy is to put the employees first – “If they feel good, they will do good the customer. And if the customer is satisfied, then ultimately your shareholders are happy ” – he feels a particular responsibility towards the environment. “I receive a lot of customer calls saying:” Hey, what happened to my recycling pickup last week? ” The environment does not call me.

On this front, he points to progress. Coming to New York when I was a child, he said, “I watched the East river and thought:” My God looks at how horrible is. »(WM does not manage the garbage collection here.) Now? “New York has done a lot. It’s not Tokyo but it is doing a good work of improvement … Are we here? No, but are we better than us? ” You can listen to our full conversation on Spotify or Apple.
