The five -year sentence pronounced to former French president Nicolas Sarkozy marks a deep moment for France, not necessarily as a political tragedy, but as a democratic stage. From a “purely institutional” point of view, this strengthens public confidence in the France’s judicial system, explains Renaud Foucart, economist and lecturer in the economy department of the Lancaster University Management School.
