A German man who ended up in prison because of his dependence on the game aims to raise awareness of the dangers of sports betting during football matches.
Thomas Melchior quickly became a social media star, because people are intrigued and take advantage of his way of attracting attention to transform the subject on the most serious issue.
The man can be seen appearing outside many different football matches in Germany, wearing the team’s rival jersey at home. He also has a sign saying “has lost a bet”.
Once people are starting to notice him standing outside the field, he then turns the conversation to talk about sports betting. In some videos, opposing fans can be visibly angry with him wearing the rival jersey.

Addressing the Associated Press, he said to them: “Yes, it is dangerous. I would not recommend it to anyone.”
The daring moves intervene after being sentenced to five and a half years in prison in 2019 for fraud and theft offenses against foreigners and people he knew. He was a former bank cashier and is now trying to rehabilitate his wrongs. Since the start of his campaign to raise awareness, his videos have been seen millions of times, a video alone accumulating 2.8 million views.
“When the handcuffs clicked, it was the first moment I felt free of charge since my first bet. It was then that I felt that I had survived the dependence on the game,” said Melchior. “At that time, I decided that I would try to repair all the damage. And I wanted to get out of the prison with the best possible conditions so that I can inform and warn people of the game dependence. This is why I am here today. ”
