Inside the laboratory to melt the oldest ice cream in the world

The ice nuclei was drilled at 2.8 km in the glacial cap in Antarctica, and they arrived at the British Antarctic investigation in early summer.

In recent weeks, a team has worked 24 hours a day to study the ice. The only way to do so is to destroy the precious samples – by melting them.

Rebecca Morelle de la BBC is with scientists while melt the last ice nuclei for analysis – they are the oldest, at least 1.5 million years.

The project to collect and study the oldest ice cream in the world has taken years of work and hundreds of people. The samples taken from the South Pole will give an environmental recording of more than a million years.
