Your 2 a.m. could soon be delivered by what looks like the child Love of Wall-E and Lightning McQueen. This week, Doordash unveiled an intentionally adorable delivery robot named Dot, which he piloting in the Phoenix region, with plans for a large deployment in the metropolitan region by the end of the year.

The anthropomorphic food box on wheels is the first incursion of Doordash in autonomous delivery on the ground – a border of many companies had trouble defeating due to the challenge of navigating the chaotic streets without angry pedestrians.

Doordash says the point is different

DOT creators are convinced that he is ready to face the world despite his innocent look:

  • The company claims that the droid loaded with dowry sensors is capable of truck driver, with a top speed of 20 MPH and sufficiently agile to sail in the occupied sidewalks, the cycle paths and the parking lots.
  • DOT can transport a delivery of 30 pounds with space for up to six pizzas.

The robot itself weighs 350 pounds and measures almost five feet high, which its creators hope to discourage anyone to play with. But if Dot has problems, there are no remote operating capacities, so field staff should be sent.

There is also the sky: Doordash and its competitor Uber Eats recently joined the company of autonomous drones Flytrex to launch aerial delivery.—Sk
