Police questioned six people arrested for suspicion of terrorist offenses on Saturday after an attack on a synagogue in northwestern England which left two dead men and the British Jewish community shocked and in mourning.

On Thursday, Jihad Al-Shamia, 35, was shot dead by police outside the Heaton Park congregation synagogue in Manchester after hitting a car in pedestrians, attacked them with a knife and tried to make their way in the building.

The members of the Congregation Melvin Cravitz, 66, and Adrian Daulby, 53, died in the attack by Yom Kippour, the most holy day of the Jewish year.

According to police, Daulby was accidentally killed by an armed officer while he and other faithful barricaded the synagogue to prevent Al-Shamia from entering. Three other men are hospitalized for serious injuries.

Detectives say that Al-Shamia, a British citizen of Syrian origin who lived in Manchester, may have been influenced by an “extreme Islamist ideology”. He wore what seemed to be a belt of explosives, which turned out to be false.

Starmer says that the police were deployed in synagogues through the United Kingdom after Manchester’s attack

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the police were deployed in synagogues across the United Kingdom after an attack in Manchester, England, and that he returned to London to chair a government emergency committee meeting, Cobra.

The police said that Al-Shamia was on bail for an alleged rape at the time of the attack, but had not been charged.

Three men and three women were arrested in the Grand Manchester region suspected of “commission, preparation and instigation of acts of terrorism”, while the police work to determine if the striker acted alone.

On Saturday, a court granted the police for five more days to hold four of the suspects: men aged 30 and 32 and women aged 46 and 61. An 18 -year -old woman and a 43 -year -old man are also questioned.

Police did not identify those arrested or disclosed their links with Al-Shamia.

Increased anti -Semitic incidents

The attack devastated the British Jewish community and intensified the debate on the line between the criticism of Israel and anti -Semitism.

The anti-Semitic incidents recorded in the United Kingdom have increased sharply since October 7, 2023 of Hamas, the attack on the War of Israel and Israel against Hamas in Gaza, according to Community Security Trust, a charitable organization which provides advice and protection to British Jews.

Some politicians and religious leaders have said that pro-Palestinian demonstrations, which have taken place regularly since the start of the war in Gaza, had played a role in the spread of the hatred of the Jews. The demonstrations have been extremely peaceful, but some say that songs such as “from the river to the sea, Palestine will be free”, encourages anti-Jewish hatred.

Some also say that recognition by the United Kingdom of a Palestinian state last month has embraced anti -Semitism – an affirmation that the government rejects. David Lammy David Lammy was interrupted by hua and cries of “shame on you” on Friday while he was speaking to a vigil for the victims of the Manchester attack.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his supporters frequently accused the criticism of Israel or his conduct of the anti -Semitism war. Critics see it as an attempt to even stifle legitimate criticism.

The Rabbi Chef Ephraim Mirvis, the chief of Orthodox Judaism in Great Britain, said that the attack was the result of an “relentless vague of Jewish hatred” in the streets and online.

Pro-Palestinian rallies in Manchester, London

Pro-Palestinian demonstrators took place in Manchester and London on Saturday despite the objections of the police and politicians. Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the organizers should “recognize and respect the sorrow of the British Jews this week” and postpone the demonstrations.

In London, the organizers said that around 1,000 people have demonstrated against the ban on action in Palestine, a direct action group that has vandalized British military aircraft and targeted sites with links with the Israeli army. He was described as a terrorist organization by the government.

The police took a number of people who sit down silently at Trafalgar Square holding signs saying “I oppose the genocide, I support the action of Palestine”. Police said they had made 355 arrests after several hours.

About 2,000 people have now been arrested during demonstrations since the action in Palestine was interrupted in July and more than 130 accused of breaches of terrorism.

Activist Jonathon Porritt said that the demonstrators “would demonstrate enormous respect and real sorrow for people affected by the absolute atrocity of Heaton Park.

“But I do not think that means that we should ask ourselves to abandon our right to defend those who are devastated by a genocide in progress in real time in Gaza,” he told the BBC.
