Ajit Agarkar addresses uncertainty around Rohit Sharma and the future ODI of Virat Kohli

Just after the India’s test series in England, reports have emerged saying that Rohit and Kohli, who both retired from testing cricket earlier this year, would play their last international series in Australia. Speculation came from suggestions that BCCI wanted senior players to focus on interior tournaments if they wanted to stay in the running for future ODI selections. Addressing these rumors, Agarkar clarified its position during the team’s announcement for the ODI and T20i series in Australia.

He admitted that he did not know if the tour in Australia would be their last in the colors of India. “This is the format they are playing right now. We have chosen them (for Australia) … Regarding the 2027 World Cup, I don’t think we need to talk about it today. You don’t have to think too far at this stage; The team is chosen for Australia, and we just need them to score races as they have been through their careers, ” Agarkar was quoted by the Hindustan Times.

Agarkar’s non -comitital response suggested that the selection committee has a performance -oriented policy for veterans. India entering a transition phase under new leadership structures, the roles of Rohit and Kohli can evolve according to their form and their commitment to the ODI format.

The main condition that could define the spell of the Rohit and Kohli World Cup

While Garkar avoided making a final statement on their participation in the World Cup, he indirectly described the path that could secure their place in the ODI 2027 World Cup in South Africa. The chief selector highlighted the importance of domestic cricket as a test field for all players, regardless of seniority. “I think we have clearly indicated a year or a few years ago that the players are available each time, they should play domestic cricket. It is the only way to keep you lively and ready for the match, especially if you have had a long break.” The main selector said.

He added that participation in the Vijay Hazare trophy, the first interior competition of 50 out of 50, could play a major role in selection decisions. “Whether possible with the international calendar or not, only time will tell us. But if the guys are free, they should play domestic cricket”, “ Agarkar concluded.

Agarkar’s comments have subtly strengthened the idea that experience alone can no longer secure automatic selection. The BCCI seems determined to ensure fair playground, where performance and participation, and not reputation, dictate inclusion in future white ball teams from India.
