The number of deaths after the collapse of a school in Indonesia has increased to 54, the authorities said, the rescuers looking for more than a dozen missing people.
Hundreds of students, most of the teenagers, gathered for prayers at the Islamic boarding school in Al Khoziny in eastern Java when he collapsed last Monday when he was under construction.
The disaster mitigation agency in Indonesia says it is the deadliest disaster in the country this year. The rescuers should do their search for 13 victims trapped under the rubble by the end of the day.
Investigators still examine the cause of collapse. Some officials said the two -story building collapsed because its foundation was unstable.
“Of all disasters in 2025, natural or not, there were not as many dead victims as those of Sidoarjo,” said a press conference Budi Irawan, assistant to the disaster mitigation agency.
The toll includes at least two people freed from debris but who died later in the hospital.
Al Khoziny is a traditional Islamic boarding school in Indonesia known as the Pesantren.
Many weighs operate informally, without strong regulations or coherent monitoring. It is not clear if Al Khoziny had a license to undertake an additional construction.
Research and rescue operations were difficult because of how the building collapsed, leaving only close empty -hand to rescuers to maneuver, authorities announced last week.
The survivors talked about their heartbreaking escapes to local media.
Muhammad Rijalul Qoib told Detik News that he first “heard the sound of the falling rocks”, which “became stronger”.
The 13 -year -old ran for the door immediately, and while he managed to escape, he was injured by falling debris from the roof.
