The game regulator in Switzerland launched an investigation into blockchain tokens supported by FIFA before the 2026 World Cup.

The regulator, Gespa, generally oversees lotteries and sports betting. The investigation aims to discover if FIFA sells the possibility of winning tickets for the World Cup matches or offering something like playing services. If it is the latter, the regulator must establish whether FIFA has respected local rules.

The director of the Director of the GHGS, Richard, shared an e-mail declaration with Bloomberg, writing: “Based on an initial internal assessment, it cannot be excluded that the supply of collection.fifa.com can be relevant under the legislation on the game. GESPA will now proceed to additional research to determine whether regulatory measures are required.”

In the current state, FIFA has not been accused of any reprehensible act at this early stage.

How do chips work?

The sale of the right tokens to buy gives buyers the right to buy a guaranteed entry to a World Cup match. Tokens holders can buy a ticket for a specific match (even if the teams and the seats are not yet known) or exchange them on secondary markets.

Some tokens are linked to a national team or a specific match, but have more risks attached. For example, the final token right guarantees a chance to buy a final ticket, but only if the team they bought the token makes it so far away.

This means that some tokens may not lead to correspondence, according to the stipulations which are attached. According to athletics, tens of thousands of purchasing tokens were sold by FIFA, which won around $ 15 million.

Although GESPA has no direct competence on FIFA, he can order Swiss companies to block any reprehensible act, such as asking the Internet suppliers based on Switzerland to block access to FIFA, if violations of local play laws are found.
