James (Jim) Lovell, the commander of Apollo 13 who helped transform a lunar mission failed into a triumph of engineering on the fly, has died. He was 97 years old.

NASA says Lovell died Thursday in Lake Forest, ill.

James (Jim) Lovell, the commander of Apollo 13 who helped transform a lunar mission failed into a triumph of engineering on the fly, has died. He was 97 years old.

Lovell died Thursday in Lake Forest, Illinois, NASA announced on Friday in a statement.
