On Sunday, five journalists from Al Jazeera were killed by an Israeli strike in Gaza City – including the 28 -year -old correspondent Anas Al -Sharif, who had been in good place in the war since his beginning.

The other four journalists from Al Jazeera killed were the correspondent Mohammed Qreiqeh, and Cameramen Ibrahim Zaher, Mohammed Noufal and Moamin Aliwa, said Al Jazeera.

Two others were also killed, said the diffuser. Hospital officials have appointed Mohammed Al-Khaldi, a local independent journalist, as one of them.

The targeted attack on a tent used by journalists has attracted a strong international conviction, especially from the UN, Qatar where Al Jazeera is based and groups of media freedom.

Israel says that Sharif was “the head of a Hamas terrorist cell” but has produced little support. Sharif previously denied it, and Al Jazeera and media rights defense groups rejected allegation.

The BBC understands that Sharif worked for a Hamas media team in Gaza before the current conflict.

In some of his publications on social networks before his death, the journalist can be understood to criticize Hamas.

The CEO of journalists of the Committee for the Protection of Journalists, Jodie Ginsberg, told the BBC that there was no justification for the murder of Sharif.

“International law is very clear on this point that only people who are legitimate targets during a war are active fighters. Having worked as a media advisor for Hamas, or even for Hamas, does not make you an active fighter,” she said.

“And nothing that Israeli forces have so far produced in terms of evidence gives us assurance that he was even an active member of Hamas.”

Anas Al-Sharif was one of the rare voices to be postponed to Gaza City, according to Al Jazeera

Anas Al-Sharif became one of Al Jazeera’s most eminent journalists in Gaza during the war.

Born in the Jabalia region densely populated north of the strip, he worked for Al Jazeera for about two years, said the diffuser.

“He worked throughout the duration of the war inside Gaza reporting the situation of people daily and the attacks on Gaza,” said Salah Negm, news director at Al Jazeera English, at the BBC.

Married to a four -year -old girl, Sham, and a one -year -old son, Salah, he was separated from them for long sections during the war when he continued to present himself from the north of the territory after refusing to follow the Israeli evacuation orders.

A joint Instagram message on his official account with that of his wife in January of this year showed a photo of Sharif smiling with her two children. The legend said that it was the first time that he met Salah, after 15 months of war.

Sharif appeared frequently in live emissions, pointing out a lot On the situation in Gaza.

He reported on the targeting of his colleagues, including an eminent correspondent of Al Jazeera Ismail Al-Ghoul and the cameraman Rami al-Rifi, which were killed in 2024 during an air strike in Gaza City.

His father had already been killed in December 2023 when the family home was targeted in an Israeli strike. A few hours before he was killed himself, he posted on an intense Israeli bombing of Gaza City.

Mohamed Moawad, the editor -in -chief of Al Jazeera, described it as the “only voice left in Gaza City” – which Israel now plans to occupy militarily.

Raed Fakih, director of entrances to Al Jazeera, the Arab channel of Al Jazeera, told BBC Sharif “courageous, devoted and honest – this is what made him succeed as a journalist with hundreds of thousands of social media followers around the world”.

Fakih, who is in charge of the channel’s offices and correspondents, added: “His dedication brought him to areas where no other journalist ventured to leave, in particular those who witnessed the worst massacres.

Fakih said he spoke to Sharif several times on the phone throughout the war.

“During our last conversations, he told me about the famine and the famine he endured, the difficulty of surviving with so little food,” he said.

“He thought he had no choice but to amplify the voice of the Gazans. He was experiencing the same difficulties they are experiencing now, suffering from famine and mourning mourning.

“His father was killed in an Israeli bombardment. In this way, he was like all the Gazans: bringing loss, pain and resilience. And even in the face of death, he persisted, because it is a story that must be told.”

Mohammed Qreieh, 33, was the father of two children from Gaza City, reported the Associated Press news agency. Like Sharif, he was separated from his family for months during the war as he brought in front lines in northern Gaza, added AP.

Qreieh’s last live broadcast took place on Sunday evening, a few minutes before its goal, Al Jazeera Arabic reported.

Israel alleges that Sharif directed the “terrorist cell”, with little evidence

The Israeli army accused Sharif of pretending to be a journalist, saying that he was “the head of a terrorist cell in Hamas” and was responsible for launching rocket attacks to the Israelis – but he produced little evidence to support these affirmations.

In a statement, the FDI said that it had documents that “prove unequivocally” its “military affiliation” with Hamas, including “personnel lists, terrorist training courses, telephone directories and salary documents”.

He publicly published certain screenshots of calculation sheets apparently listing Hamas from the Northern Gaza Hamas, noting injuries to Hamas agents and a section of what would be a telephone repertoire for the East Jabalia battalion of the armed group.

Israel had previously accused Sharif of being a member of the Hamas military wing – which he and his employer firmly denied.

Journalists Without Borders (RSF), a media freedom group, said that the allegations against him were “baseless” and called on the international community to intervene.

“Without a strong action by the international community to stop the Israeli army … We are likely to attend such extrajudicial murders of media professionals,” said RSF.

According to RSF, nearly 200 journalists were killed during the war that Israel was launched in response to the attack on October 7, 2023.

Al Jazeera Fakih accused the Israeli army of making stories about journalists before killing them, to “hide what (he) begins in Gaza”. Israel previously denied having targeted journalists.

He described this as a “long -standing model” and referred to the murder of the Israeli army of the Palestinian veteran journalist Shireen Abu Aqla, who was shot in the head during an Israeli army raid in the West Bank occupied in 2022.

The Israeli army concluded that one of its soldiers probably killed him, but called on his involuntary death. Al Jazeera said his evidence showed that it was a “deliberate murder”.

“Here is a crucial fact: if Israel had been held responsible for the assassination of Shireen, he would not have dared to kill 200 journalists in Gaza,” said Fakih.

Sharif knew he was likely to be targeted by Israel after his spokesman in Arabic published a video of him in July and accused him of being a member of the Hamas military wing.

In an article published on his account X, which was pre-written in the event of death, Sharif said that he “had done everything and all my strength to be support and a voice for my people … Do not forget Gaza”.
