European leaders warned against the Ukrainian borders redesigned by force – two days before an American -Russia summit in Ukraine takes place in Alaska.

In a statement, European leaders said that “the inhabitants of Ukraine must have the freedom to decide their future”.

He added that the principles of “territorial integrity” must be respected and “international borders should not be modified by force”.

The declaration was signed by 26 of the 27 managers. The leader of Hungary, Viktor Orban, has absent signatories, who has had friendly relations with Russia and has repeatedly tried to block the support of the EU in Ukraine.

The declaration underlined the nervousness felt by the Europeans about Moscow actions in Ukraine, that many countries – in particular those which limited Russia or those in which the memory of the Soviet occupation still persists – could believe could represent a direct threat to a near future.

In recent years, Sweden and Finland have joined NATO, the Baltic countries have restored conscription and Poland has set aside billions to build a barrier alongside its border with Russia.

European countries have a long history of borders redesigned by bloody wars and are extremely concerned about the prospect that the United States makes it possible to occur in Ukraine. A legal recognition of the sovereignty of Russia in the territories which it has conquered by force is unacceptable for the EU.

However, the idea that certain Ukrainian regions currently under Russian control could not return to kyiv is gaining ground.

American president Donald Trump insisted that any peace agreement would imply “an exchange of territories” and could see Russia taking the whole region of Donbas in eastern Ukraine and keeping Crimea. In exchange, he would abandon the regions of Kherson and Zaporizhzhia, which he partly occupies.

Last week, while admitting that a Ukrainian territory could end up being de facto controlled by Russia, NATO chief Mark Rutte stressed that this should not be officially recognized.

In their statement, European leaders said that “Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine has broader implications for European and international security”, and stressed the need for “just and lasting peace”.

They also declared that Ukraine should be able to “defend itself effectively” and have committed to continuing to provide military support to kyiv, who “exercised his right inherent in self -defense”.

“The European Union underlines the law inherent in Ukraine to choose its own destiny and will continue to support Ukraine on its way to membership in the EU,” concluded the press release.

The drop in the apparent declaration unit of the declaration was a smaller impression line at the bottom of the page stressing that “Hungary does not associate itself with this declaration”.

In an article on social networks, his chief Viktor Orban said he had chosen not to support the declaration when she was trying to set conditions for a meeting to which the EU was not invited and warned the managers not to start “providing bench instructions”.

He also urged the EU to set up his own summit with Russia – although EU leaders have avoided direct talks with Moscow since he launched his invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Trump revealed on Monday that he had asked Orban’s advice on the chances that Ukraine won Russia on the battlefield. “He looked at me as” what a stupid question, “said Trump, suggesting that Orban thought that Russia would continue to make war until she beat her opponent.

EU leaders are expected to organize interviews with Trump on Wednesday. They hope to put the security of the European continent and Ukrainian interests at the forefront of his mind – at a time when nervousness increases that peace imposed on Ukraine can end up being neither “just” nor “lasting”.

Trump and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin should then meet in Alaska on Friday.
