According to an aid group that works there.

Abu Shouk’s emergency intervention room said Monday’s assault was led by rapid support forces (RSF). The resistance committee of the neighboring city of El-Fasher, made up of local citizens and activists, also reported it.

El-Fasher, who was also subjected to an intense attack, is the last major foot in Darfur for the army and its allies, who fought the paramilitary RSF in the two-year civil war.

The conflict sparked a humanitarian crisis with the UN warning that families trapped in the besieged city are faced with famine.

The Sudanese media reported that the camp had been taken in the cross-fires of the fighting in El-Fasher.

But the help group inside Abu Shouk, where at least 200,000 people live, said that some of the people killed during the attack had been killed at home while others had been killed in public.

An organization based in the United States which analyzes imaging and satellite videos declared that it identified a large group of 40 light vehicles in the districts of the northwest of the camp, which seem to corroborate the reports according to which the attack came from the north.

The Yale Humanitarian Research Lab added that he was investigating images and videos “showing that the RSF was shooting people who approached them and reprimanded and used ethnic insults”.

The camp was created more than two decades ago by people of non -Arab communities – including fur and zaghawa – who fled attacks by the militia of Janjaweed.

The RSF has its origins in this notorious militia which has been accused of having achieved a genocide.

The RSF was also largely accused of ethnic cleaning in Darfur during this war, and the United States sanctioned it with allegations of genocide.

The RSF previously denied such accusations, saying that it was not part of what it calls tribal conflicts.

Zaghawa fighters joined the army to defend El-Fasher, it is therefore possible that the RSF deliberately targets civilians from Zaghawa in the camp.

The camps of displaced people near El-Fasher were often attacked during the war.

In April, more than 100 people died and thousands fled Zamzam Camp while the RSF occupied and took it.

Since the start of the conflict in April 2023, tens of thousands of people have died, 12 million have been forced from their home and famine has been declared in certain parts of the country.
