A planned visit to US trade representatives in New Delhi later this month was canceled, according to the Indian broadcaster NDTV Profit.
The visit which was to take place between August 25 and August 29 will probably be reprogrammed, reported NDTV, citing people familiar with the issue.
The report comes at a time when trade relations between the two countries have embittered with American president Donald Trump imposing a coverage rate of 25% on Indian exports, and at the top of an additional 25% – which should come into force on August 27 – as a “penalty” for the purchase of Russian crude.
The two parties are in contact with each other, but a new tallers’ calendar has not been finalized, according to the report.
The cumulative rate of 50% of Trump on India is among the highest of all American trade partners and has made a strong response from New Delhi.
India said it was unjustly targeted, while calling the EU and the United States on their continuous trade with Russia. “It is indicative that the very nations criticizing India themselves engage in trade with Russia. Unlike our case, such a trade is not even a vital national constraint (for them),” the country’s foreign ministry said in a statement earlier this month.
The Indian Ministry of Commerce and Industry, and the office of the US trade representative did not immediately respond to the request for CNBC comments.
The United States is the largest export partner in India, with almost 20% of its overall exports, or $ 86.51 billion in goods, shipped to the United States during the year ended March 2025, according to the latest official data.
