The Oregon firefighters run to save the Doerner tree – one of the largest and oldest trees in the world – a fire that has been burning since Saturday.

The giant fir tree, more than 325 feet (99 m) high and estimated at over 450, has already lost around 50 feet against fire, which can compromise its position in the global classification of height, according to those responsible.

With warmer and dry weather forecasts along the Côtes de l’Oeron range, firefighters find it difficult to turn off the fire.

Officials have discussed certain unconventional ways to turn off the fire, including construction scaffolding to reach and remove the flames above on the tree.

The cause of the fire remains unknown, although the lightning has been excluded.

On Tuesday, an infrared drone found no active flame or smoke at the top of the tree, but he detected heat inside a cavity in the trunk about 280 feet high, the spokesperson for the Federal of Land Management Bureau Mangan, Megan Harper, told the BBC.

Harper told ABC News that the fire could have an impact on the position of the tree in the global height ranking.

“We have lost about 50 feet, just because of the fire and the pieces,” she said, noting that the 50 feet were lost through the summit. “So I don’t know where it will happen after that, but it’s always a magnificent tree.”

She also said that there was no risk that the tree burns completely.

“The tree is so large, it has so much mass that it would take a while for it to burn throughout the tree,” she said.

The COOS Forest Protective Association said that the drops of helicopter bucket reduced the activity of the fire near the summit, while the sprinklers and the containment lines were installed around the base. A helicopter remains pending.
