Two Haitian police officers were killed and two others seriously injured when an explosive drone accidentally exploded in a Swat base near the capital of Haiti, the Caribbean Nation authorities said on Wednesday.

Directed by Haitian Prime Minister Alix Didier Son-Aimé, a working group since March operates “suicide bomber” drones loaded with explosives to help the police fight powerful armed gangs who have taken control of most of the capital.

A private military company led by the founder of Blackwater, Erik Prince, also participates in drone operations.

The Prime Minister’s office said in a statement that the accident had taken place Tuesday evening in the city on the side of Kenscoff hill – a flash point in the conflict due to its strategic location overlooking the diplomatic center of the city.

“A kamikaze drone, transported by residents in good faith, exploded on the site, killing two police officers and seriously injuring two others,” said his office in a statement.

Citing several anonymous sources, Miami Herald reported that six officers had been injured in the explosion. The Prime Minister’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comments.

Local residents found the drone after its operators lost contact with the aircraft due to bad weather, he brought it to the neighboring police. Shortly after, he exploded.

Mortal incident under investigation

Haiti national police said that an investigation had been opened.

Canada Ambassador to Haiti on gang violence in the country and how Ottawa can help

Canadian ambassador to Haiti, André François Giroux, discusses the growing violence of gangs in the Caribbean nation and Canada’s role to help restore stability.

“We take all measures to ensure an in -depth investigation into this tragedy,” said Fritz Alphonse Jean, member of the Chairman’s Transitional Council of Haiti, on social networks.

Jean had recently been the head of the presidential transitional council until Laurent Saint-Cyr seated this role earlier this month.

The armed groups began to attack Kenscoff at the start of this year. Rights defense groups report massacres, rapes, criminal fires and kidnappings, and thousands of people have fled their homes. Earlier this month, a three-year-old boy and seven employees were kidnapped by a local orphanage, including the Irish missionary Gena Heraty.

More than 3,100 were killed in the conflict in the first half of this year, according to United Nations reports.

Certain external parts – including the Government of Canada – have expressed scruples on the use of drones by Haiti to repel gangs.

Canada has provided surveillance drones to help protect the police in Haiti, said CBC News last month.

But the drones provided in Canada were not of a type designed for fatal use, according to the federal government.
