The mayor of New York keeps hope for the Bronx Casino alive in the last intervention

The mayor of New York, Eric Adams, vetoed a decision of the municipal council, keeping the hope of a Bally casino in the Bronx alive.
On Tuesday, July 29, the mayor Eric Adams opposed his veto to the decision of the municipal council to refuse the changes of land use necessary for the Bally casino proposed in the Bronx. This marks the second intervention of Adams, after having reduced last month the threshold of 34 to 26 votes to respect a much necessary resolution.
The mayor’s last intervention keeps the hopes of the $ 4 billion proposal for a 500,000 square feet play space in Throggs Neck, the Bronx. In addition to providing a hub for the game, it would also offer a spa, a meeting space, retail spaces, parking garages for more than 4,600 vehicles and an event center with 2000 spaces.
The move of Adams gave the proposal for more time, because the State will take off where the three Casino licenses for the New York region should be allocated. The municipal council has until August 11 (two weeks before the intervention of the mayor) to collect 34 votes to cancel its decision.
“The municipal council’s decision to deal with the Bronx differently from the other districts goes against the publicly stated posts of the president of the Bronx district and other members of the Council representing the neighborhoods of the working class across the Bronx,” Adams said in a statement.
Adams’ decision was criticized by the Council, the member of the Council, Kristy Marmorato, said, as reported by the city: “Despite the selfish affirmations concerning housing and the use of land by Adams and its second charter revision commission in less than two years documented and was observed by all New Yorkers. »»
Controversy on the site of the new Bally
Each new New York casino must prove that it offers local advantages. While Bally argues that it offers widespread economic advantages, with $ 625 million promised in community support, the criticism of the proposal argues that the Bronx needs housing for the elderly, improvement of transit options and more investment in health care, rather than a casino and an entertainment space.
Bally’s is not the only proposal in the running for attention in the New York region, with many offers that push for one of the three available licenses.
