Thomas Frank admitted that Tottenham supporters were justified to act his team after a dark defeat 1-0 at home against Bournemouth suddenly stopped his promising departure as a chief trainer.

The Danish manager had supervised an impressive victory at Manchester City only a week earlier and won the momentum with the signing of Xavi Simons of RB Leipzig.

But the Spurs failed to support this at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, achieving a lifeless performance that gave Bournemouth to Andoni Iraola their second campaign victory.

Frank had experienced a solid record against the Cherries, winning seven of his 10 previous meetings, but this time he watched his team badly for creativity and intensity. Bournemouth watched the team clearer throughout, with a particularly dangerous David Brooks, and visitors could easily have won by a greater margin.

The Spurs did not record any significant effort before the 69th minute, when the Lucas Bergvall strike was saved by Djordje Petrovic – their only shot on Target all afternoon.

It is not surprising that the crowd expressed its frustration at halftime and still at the final whistle.

“I prefer that they are not booking, but I understand,” said Frank afterwards. “It was not a good performance and they have high expectations, which is absolutely right.

“I do not think that we have reached the level we should. I think that the players have given everything and then it is the foundation and that the heart is there, but in wise football, we have not reached our high level today.”

With the football of the Champions League on the horizon and the depth of the still thin team, the defeat was a reminder that gives to think the work to come.

Simons, who recorded 22 goals and 24 assists in 78 games for Leipzig, should add an essential spark once he settles.

When asked if the game showed the scale of the challenge, Frank replied: “Yes, but it’s not just about making the team the level. It is also for us not to manage, but to play in different games.

“There is a match against City, a type of football, a different type of football against Burnley.

“Bournemouth completely different from the third type of football and all kinds of football against which you must be able to play, and we had trouble with.”

Frank was nevertheless optimistic about what his new signature will bring. “I think he can bring a day when … Sometimes you need a player who can do something a little out of anything, pass the player, produce a cross, a shot, a pass, with this additional quality you need the day and that’s what I think can bring.”
