Ukraine promises to retaliate after the Russian attacks against the energy sector
Russian drone attacks against electrical installations in the north and southern Ukraine during the night left nearly 60,000 customers without electricity, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy promising to fight back by commanding more strikes deep in Russia.
Three and a half years after the war, Russia and Ukraine have both intensified air strikes in recent weeks. Russia has targeted the energy and transport systems of Ukraine, while Ukraine attacks Russian oil refineries and pipelines.
“We will continue our operations active in the way in which the defense of Ukraine and resources are also necessary.
The largest private energy company in Ukraine, DTEK, said that Russian drones had attacked four energy facilities in the Odesa region overnight, and local authorities reported that 29,000 people had been left without electricity early on Sunday.
The hardest part was the port city of Chornomorsk, just outside Odesa, where houses and administrative buildings were also damaged, said Oleh Kiper, the wider region of Odesa.
“The critical infrastructure works on generators,” said Kiper on the Telegram messaging application, adding that a person had been injured after the attack.
The Dtek Power Company said that emergency repair work is starting as soon as the soldiers gave it the whole light.
In waters close to the great strategic and strategically important port, a civilian loose carrier piloting the Belize flag underwent minor damage after hitting an unknown explosive device, anonymity told Reuters.
Chornomorsk is one of the three Ukrainian ports operating in a maritime transport corridor connecting the Black Sea to the Mediterranean.
Pope’s ceasefire call
Russian drones also targeted the north of the Chernihiv region of Ukraine on Sunday, damaging energy infrastructure and leaving 30,000 households without electricity, including part of the city of Nizhyn, said Viacheslav Chaus, local governor.
The Ukrainian army said that Russia had attacked Ukraine with 142 drones overnight and that its air defense forces managed to shoot 126 of them. However, drones hit 10 locations.
The Russian Defense Ministry said that its forces had struck Ukrainian port infrastructure in the capital, kyiv, which, she said, had been used for military purposes. Reuters could not independently check the reports.
The battles intensified by both parties in recent weeks are involved, while US President Donald Trump is leading to the war, which began in February 2022, when Moscow launched a large -scale invasion.
The Kremlin said on Sunday that the European powers hampered the peace efforts of Trump and that Russia would continue to function in Ukraine until Moscow sees real signs that kyiv was ready for peace.
Moscow has twice launched large -scale attacks during last week, killing dozens of civilians and destroying their urban homes and infrastructure.
The American special envoy on Ukraine said that the deadly Russian attacks have undermined Trump’s efforts to end the war, while Pope Leo called on a ceasefire and dialogue on Sunday.
“It is time for officials to give up the logic of weapons and take the path of negotiation and peace with the support of the international community,” said Leo in his Sunday prayer with pilgrims on Saint-Pierre square in Rome.
