Arrest after the deadly filming of Ukrainian politician Andriy Parbiy

A suspect in the fatal shooting of an eminent Ukrainian politician Andriy Parubiy was arrested, said country Volodymyr Zelensky.

The 54 -year -old parliamentarian was killed by an attacker pretending to be a letter in the western city of LVIV on Saturday, causing a man hunt.

Ukraine Minister of Ukraine Igor Klymenko said in a statement published in the early hours of Monday morning that the suspect was detained in the Western region of Khmelnytskyi.

Parubiy gained importance during the mass demonstrations of Euromaidan of Euromaidan in Ukraine, which recommended closer links with the EU and dropped former pro-Russian president Viktor Yanukovych in 2014.

Klymenko said the preliminary investigation had revealed that the murder had been “carefully prepared” with Parubiy’s travel calendar and the mapped route, as well as an escape plan.

He added that the national police forces of Ukraine would provide more details later.

In an article on social networks, Zelensky said that he had spoken to chief prosecutor Ruslan Kravchenko who advised that the suspect had an initial testimony.

“Urgent investigation actions are currently underway to establish all the circumstances of this murder,” he added, while thanking the police and prosecutors to “work 24 hours a day.

Uncorified images, allegedly of the shooting, seemed to show a drawer disguised as mail approached by Parbiy in the street and holding a weapon while walking behind him.

During a press briefing on Saturday, Lviv police chief Oleksandr Shliakhovskyi said that the striker “fired about eight gunshots.”

Sources in the law enforcement agencies of Ukraine told the BBC that the attacker had dressed to resemble a worker of the Glovo delivery company. The company said that it was “deeply shocked” by crime and would cooperate fully with an investigation.

Parubiy was the president of the country’s parliament from April 2016 to August 2019.

He was one of the leaders of the demonstrations in 2013-2014 who called for closer links with the European Union. He organized his “self -defense” teams who kept the sprawling tent camp in the heart of the Kyiv capital during the demonstration.
