Seven Al-Shabab activists who attacked a high security prison in the Somali capital were all killed, said the country’s government.

A huge explosion and shots were heard from Godka Jilicow – a detention center that owns Al -Shabab activists on Saturday evening in Mogadiscio.

In a statement, Al-Shabab said that he had released “all Muslim prisoners” of the establishment and made heavy victims to those who kept the center.

The activists disguised themselves as soldiers to enter the prison, the news agency managed by the government was lived live on Sunday.

The government did not indicate how many of its security forces were killed during the incident, but have given its condolences to the families of the “fallen heroes”.

Likewise, Al-Shabab did not give a death toll for its activists.

The fights started around 4:40 p.m. local time (13:40 GMT).

Godka Jilicow is located near the Somali presidential palace, in the heart of Mogadiscio. He is inhabited by the National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) of Somalia and holds militants from Al-Shabab and other high-level detainees.

The attack is a blow for NISA and is likely to raise questions about how activists have been able to access one of the most kept areas in the capital.

Al-Shabab has been affiliated with Al-Qaeda and has led a brutal insurrection against the government in Somalia for almost 20 years.

A few hours before the attack on Saturday, the government had reopened the key routes of Mogadishu which were previously closed for security reasons, citing improvements in the security of the city.
