Amazon suspends drone deliveries after two accidents

Amazon’s drones will not be in production for the foreseeable future. According to Bloombergthe company suspended all flights in Texas and Arizona after an unexplained incident in which two Amazon MK30 drones crashed at the airport in Pendleton, Oregon that they were using for testing. MK30 is the company’s next model, which is lighter and longer than its predecessor, the MK27. The incident occurred in December, when one of the airliners caught fire after it crashed. Amazon says it has confirmed that its drones crashed due to a software bug linked to rain during the test.

The company said, however, that the accidents were not a “major reason” for suspending drone deliveries. Amazon spokesman Sam Stephenson said Bloomberg that “we are currently in the process of making software changes to the drone” and that the active shutdown is voluntary. Once the changes are complete, Amazon still needs to get approval from the Federal Aviation Administration before it can resume operations. “The workers at the drone sites, who were informed of the action on Friday, will continue to be paid during the break,” Stephenson said.

In addition to the December crash, two MK30 fighter jets collided during another test a few months ago. Stephenson explained that Amazon expects to see such events in the test and that it helps the company to improve the security of the service. Amazon has been delivering non-medical products via drones in Texas since 2022 supplementing prescription drugs A year later. In 2024, Amazon stopped shipping drones to California, as well he started service in Phoenix, Arizona.
