Mikel Arteta praised the winning mentality of his Arsenal team after opening his premier League campaign with a 1-0 victory against Manchester United in Old Trafford.

Riccardo Calafiori scored the only goal in the 13th minute, leaping at close range after the goalkeeper Altay Bayindir failed to manage the Inswing corner of Declan Rice.

For Arsenal, the result has strengthened their transformation into “Big Six” clubs. In September 2020, less than a year after Arteta’s mandate, the Gunners had won only two of their 40 games in the previous outside against such opposition.

Now they are undefeated in 21 consecutive league matches against Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester United, Manchester City and Tottenham in the last two seasons.

By reflecting on progress, Arteta said: “Well, I think it was the case … It was 18 years or 22 years here in Old Trafford without winning before coming, and now I’m going to the locker room, we won the first match here, and we are not always happy. Good sign.

“A great important result entering the first match of the season at Old Trafford. When you feel that they are building something special and momentum with the new signatures and that they want to launch the season in the right direction and that you are able to leave with victory, I think I am very happy.”

Arteta was also satisfied with how his players responded at difficult times in the competition.

“We have shown it in a different way today. I think we did two things very well. First, to take the room and then react to errors in particular. Some of them are necessary, some of them unusual. But the way each player reacted to this gives us the opportunity to win the game.

Otherwise, it is impossible. And this is the way we compete and how much we want to take it. »»

Then Arsenal returns to the Emirates to welcome Leeds on August 23. Manchester United is back in action the next day, going to Craven Cottage to face Fulham.
