At least 14 people died in Nepal on Monday in violent demonstrations against the closure of social media by the government and alleged corruption, public television said.

The authorities imposed a curfew around the parliament building after thousands of demonstrators tried to enter the legislative assembly by breaking a police barricade.

Nepal blocked access to several social media platforms, including Facebook last week after having failed to register with the authorities in a repression against improper use.

The government said that social media users with false identity documents have disseminated speeches in hatred and false news, and committing fraud and other crimes via certain platforms.

Several demonstrators were injured and taken to a neighboring hospital, said a Reuters witness. A group of demonstrators arrested a security vehicle heading for Parliament and an ambulance was burned down, they added.

Ekram Giri, spokesperson for the Nepal Parliament, said that some demonstrators had entered the parliament premises but had not reached its main building. They had been driven by the police and gathered on the road outside, he said.

“We have imposed a curfew that will remain in force until 10 pm, the local time to master the situation after the demonstrators began to become violent,” Muktiram Rijal, spokesperson for the Katmandu district office, told Reuters.

The police were ordered to use water cannons, batons and rubber bullets to control the crowd, said Rijal.

The police said that similar demonstrations had also been organized in Biratnagar and Bharatpur in the South Plains and Pokhara, a gateway to the 10th highest world mountain, Mount Annapurna, in western Nepal.

Earlier Monday, thousands of young people, including students, many of whom are in their school or university uniforms, were arrested by the police to walk towards the parliament building, where the demonstrations are not authorized.

The demonstrators transported the national flag and the signs with slogans such as “close corruption and not social media”, “social media” and “young people against corruption”, while they were walking through Katmandu.

The government of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli was criticized by opponents for having omitted to keep its promises.
