India showed determination in a worst-ever second innings on Day 1 of the fourth Test against Australia in Melbourne, part of the ICC World Test Championship. Despite Australia’s strong start, which saw Sam Konstas spoil the morning session, the Indian bowlers changed their approach after lunch, slowing down the pace and chasing batsman Usman Khawaja.

Indian Bowlers Fight Back

After lunch, India adopted a more restrained approach, maintaining Australia’s lead. Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah led the way with well-crafted plans. Siraj threw tight lines, used leg chips on Marnus Labuschagne and fed him straight to the body, even hitting him in the neck a few times. This constant pressure caused Labuschagne to lose control as he often did.

Jasprit Bumrah continued his golden run in the series by removing Usman Khawaja, who scored a hard-fought 57 off 121 balls. Khawaja looked unsteady throughout his game but showed courage to reach his maiden fifty. However, his stay came to an abrupt end when he was bowled by Bumrah to KL Rahul for the wickets. While the dismissal may seem fortunate, it was proof that Bumrah was constantly searching.

Labuschagne Captures the Fort

Marnus Labuschagne has been a tough nut to crack for Indian chefs, and today was no different. Despite enduring several runs, Labuschagne was not bowled on 44 off 109 balls. He joined Steven Smith, who bowled carefully to reach 10 runs. The pair will be vital for Australia to build on their foundations in the evening session.

The Kohli-Konstas debate

The morning session was not without drama as Virat Kohli and Australian opener Sam Konstas clashed in the middle of the pitch. The incident happened after the 10th over when Kohli and Konstas collided shoulders, which led to a hilarious reaction from both the players. Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting, analyzing the incident, suggested that Kohli may have caused the fracas by stepping into Konstas’ path.

While moments of crisis like this are part of tough Test cricket, the clash raised questions about whether it could have been avoided. Meanwhile, it has added another twist to the already captivating game.

Bumrah’s Dominance in the Series

With Khawaja’s dismissal, Bumrah has now taken 22 wickets in seven innings in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024. The pacer has been consistent, showing exceptional skill and character. Despite being targeted by Konstas in the first innings, Bumrah remained steadfast, creating chances to win.

Final Thoughts

As tea was called, Australia stood at 164/3 after 59 overs. With Labuschagne and Smith at the crease, the hosts are in a stable position but far from in control. On the other hand, India will be buoyed by their ability to thwart Australia’s progress and will look to continue bowling smartly in the final phase.

The Melbourne Test promises drama, creativity, and plenty of battles – both with the ball and between minds – as the day progresses.
