Australia’s best batting line-up found its groove on Boxing Day, ensuring the hosts took first place honors in the fourth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). On a day where the Australian batsmen were at their best with their first win of the series, the bowlers posted an awe-inspiring 311/6. Contributions from Sam Konstas, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, and Steve Smith laid the foundation, though the Indian bowlers kept them in the game with their win.
Sparkling Debut by Sam Konstas
Australia’s decision to name 19-year-old Sam Konstas was brilliant. Tasked against Jasprit Bumrah, Konstas put in a brilliant performance, disrupting India’s bowling plans. The opener got off to a rough start, getting hit a few times by Bumrah, but his fearless approach soon paid dividends. Konstas produced a number of wickets, scoring boundaries and even a six off Bumrah – the first in Tests since 2021.
Konstas brought the ball to life at the age of just 52, becoming Australia’s second youngest Test half-centurion. His attacking knock of 60 set the tone of the innings before Ravindra Jadeja caught him LBW to break the opening stand of 89.
Middle-Order Grit
With Konstas preparing the stage, Khawaja and Labuschagne built on the platform and fixed contributions. Khawaja, under pressure after a peaceful series, scored his first half-century, while Labuschagne continued his run with 72. The duo scored a penalty from Akash Deep and Bumrah, who kept the score going during the tournament. won the second round.
India’s persistence paid off when Bumrah dismissed Khawaja for 56, leading to a misguided start. The dismissal brought Steve Smith to the crease, and he, along with Labuschagne, took advantage of the old ball to rebuild the innings.
Bumrah’s Ultimate Blast
India came back into the game in the final session. Washington Sundar accounted for Labuschagne with a strong catch to Virat Kohli, and Bumrah followed up with a double. He dropped Travis Head for a duck and dismissed Mitchell Marsh cheaply to leave Australia reeling at 246/5.
Smith’s courage, however, proved. The consistent batsman showed his skills aggressively, especially against Jadeja. Smith found a trusted partner in Alex Careyand their 53-run partnership boosted the ship before Carey plunged into the Akash Deep under the lights. Smith remained unbeaten on 68, guiding Australia to rest alongside captain Pat Cummins.
India’s Bowlers Battle
Although they scored 311 runs, the Indian bowlers showed their composure. Bumrah was the best performer with figures of 3-75, including late wickets. Akash Deep, though wicketless for a long time, bowled tirelessly and had to brush his head off Carey.
The day ended with Australia narrowly ahead, but with the pitch providing support to the bowlers and the depth of India’s batting, the Tests remain in good shape.
