Prime Minister Mark Carney said Canada can find opportunities in crisis after attending the United Nations General Assembly for this week in New York – where US President Donald Trump used his podium to question the institution’s objective.

“At every moment when there is a crack, when there is a break, there is the possibility – and it is our responsibility, it is our opportunity as Canada at the moment to find it,” Carney told the media on Tuesday evening.

“And after my visit to the United Nations General Assembly, I can assure Canadians that there are light, there are many possibilities.”

Carney listened to Trump’s speech on Tuesday at an hour at the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday. In this document, the president complained of the United Nations and preached his “America First” policies that have turned geopolitics and the world economy upside down.

Prime Minister Mark Carney closed his remarks at a press conference on Tuesday by paying tribute to the outgoing ambassador of the UN Bob Rae, calling him “stable hand” and “so often the Canadian voice of conscience and conviction”.

“What is the purpose of the United Nations?” Trump asked by accusing the institution of being full of “empty words”.

Trump said the United Nations had enormous potential “but that it doesn’t even approach” to live it.

“These are the two things I obtained from the United Nations: a bad escalator and a bad telepromptor,” he said.

The president then reassured the diplomats concerned by the tone of his speech filled with grievances. He told Secretary -General Antonio Guterres that he may sometimes disagree with the United Nations, he is also “so behind because the peace potential in this institution is great”.

Earlier this year, Trump ordered an examination of the participation of the United States in the organization, withdrew from the United Nations Human Rights Council and designed US funding.

US President Donald Trump accused the United Nations of funding and supporting “an assault against Western countries” when he criticized immigration policies in member countries and urged them to “take a stand” and defend their borders.

In his speech, Trump also rejected the American allies, including Canada, which participated in a coordinated effort to recognize a Palestinian state. Trump said this decision would reward Hamas for his attack on October 7, 2023 against Israel.

Carney did not have a head-to-face meeting with the president while he was in New York, but attended a reception Tuesday evening for the world leaders organized by the president.

The Prime Minister attended a Wednesday summit on the creation of a sustainable and resilient world economy, where he had warm exchanges with the leaders of other nations and the director of the World Trade Organization Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.

He spoke of the central role of international finances in the scale of private capital for emerging and developing economies.

“We have to use rare dollars for the maximum effect,” said Carney. “These are not only more important volumes.”

The Prime Minister used the General Assembly to meet CEOs and world leaders – is one of the efforts of his government to diversify Canada’s trade and economy in response to Trump’s efforts to realign world trade thanks to devastating rates.

Carney met leaders from Asia, Africa, Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean.

After a meeting with Chinese Prime Minister Li Qiang, Prime Minister Mark Carney said there was a range of opportunities to expand Canada and China’s trade relations, including clean and conventional energy and agriculture, and that he had an “ open discussion ” with the Prime Minister on steel prices.

During a bilateral meeting with Chinese Prime Minister Li Qiang, Carney noted that since the two had spoken on the phone, “our two countries, our civil servants, began to commit much more regularly, much more constructively”.

Carney told Li that the two countries “have an opportunity in a world that changes quickly … to bring this partnership and bring it back to a new level, in a range of fields”.

The Prime Minister worked to restore diplomatic relations with Beijing which was tense when Canada – largely to align with the United States – hit China with targeted tariffs on key industries such as steel and electric vehicles. In return, China threw Canada with heavy tasks, especially on canola.
