Crystal Palace 1-0 Fredrikstad – Report, Result and goals while the Eagles go to the conference league

The very first European Crystal Palace match in Selhurst Park ended with a victory, but the score was closer than many people had planned it.
The head of Jean-Philippe Mateta in the second half proved to be the difference when the Eagles outstripped Norwegian visitors Fredrikstad 1-0 in the first leg of their Europa conference league.
It was a historic evening in southern London, with Selhurst Park welcoming continental football for the first time. However, the accumulation was dominated by off -scope questions. Ebelechi Eze, the club’s talismic playmaker, was removed from the team in the middle of an imminent transfer to Arsenal.
His absence was largely in the 90 minutes, while Oliver Glasner’s team dug 25 attempts to the goal, but was missing to build a dominant advance before the next week’s return leg in Norway.
The tone of the night was set early. Palace checked possession from the first whistle, Fredrikstad falling into a compact form and based strongly on long throws and rare counterattacks to relieve the pressure.
Marc Guehi, captain on the side and pushing forward of the central defender, was improbable the most creative force of palace during the opening period.
He produced three efforts on the goal and two key passes in the first half which underlined both his technical capacity and the palace struggle to unlock visitors without Eze.
The Eagles have created a lot but wasted on several occasions. Guehi himself sent a long throw, Mateta had a left foot strike saved by goalkeeper Borsheim, while Jefferson Lerma and Adam Wharton both fired promising positions.
The clearest luck fell to Mateta, whose powerful strike died on the post, letting Selhurst moan in unison.
Fredrikstad, despite the fact that it is little in the future, almost stole his head against the race of the game. Halfway through the first half, Sorlokk broke on the left and square in a dangerous area, only so that the ricoche ball sheltered from his attacker and wide range from the range at a bland range.
It was a huge break for the palace and a reminder that European football punishes debauchery.
Heroism in the second period
Without a sure blow to the break, the tension increased. Glasner’s frustration was obvious as he walked early in the tunnel, knowing that his side dominated without reward.
The second half started in the same way, the palace forcing errors at the top of the field but not applying the final touch. Devenny, presented the role of midfielder attacker of Eze, wasted a glorious chance of the Guehi Cross.
The relief finally arrived in the 54th minute. A long throw again disturbed Fredrikstad’s defense, the ball ends up falling to Will Hughes, whose volley was intelligently redirected by Mateta in the net.
It was a historic strike – the first palace in European competition – and it briefly transformed the atmosphere into a carnival.
But the valves did not open. Mateta continued to disturb the defense, Hughes and Odsonne Edouard combined well for the openings, and Daniel Munoz hit the post with a back of the back.
However, for all the pressure, Palace could not find the second elusive goal that would have provided a real respiratory space.
The closing minutes have caused anxiety. The replacement Skogvold freed himself in time of time and had the chance to level, only to drag his shot largely from the post of Dean Henderson. Selhurst Park exhaled in relief, the narrow intact advantage.
A 1-0 lead gives Palace something to defend in Norway, but Glasner knows that the waste of his team leaves the link finely ready.
With Eze who was to leave and also the subject of transfer speculation, the Eagles will have to refine their finish if they want to obtain a place in the league phase.
