Demonstrations broke out in Indonesia after the motorcyclist killed by a police vehicle during conflicts

On Friday, hundreds of Indonesians protested against Jakarta sites on the death of a civilian by a police vehicle, triggering calls for police reform during the first major test for the government of President Prabowo Soubianto, almost a year old.

The civilian, a motorcycle carpooling driver, was struck on the site of violent clashes Thursday near parliament while the police sought to disperse the protesting demonstrators on issues such as the financing of the remuneration and the education of the legislators.

Friday afternoon, the demonstrations prompted a certain number of schools in the capital to allow students to leave early and banks and companies to ask employees to work at home. The army has been deployed in certain regions, have shown visuals by local media.

The drivers, the students in colorful jackets and the Indonesians from other horizons went down to the parliament of the country and the police seat in Jakarta to organize demonstrations on Friday, throwing stones on the doors and singing: “Killer! Killer!”

The demonstrators were not discouraged by the previous remarks of Prabowo calling for calm, expressing condolences for the death of Affan Kurniawan and ordering an in -depth investigation of the incident.

“I am shocked and disappointed by the excessive actions of the officers,” said Prabowo, whose presidency approaches his birthday in October. “I ordered an in -depth and transparent survey … and the officers involved must be responsible.”

Police apologies

Capital police chief ASEP Edi Suheri said that a armored police vehicle had hit and killed Kurniawan, who worked for the Gojek and Gob carpooling services, on Thursday clashed. He apologized to the Kurniawan family.

A motorcycle engines association said Kurniawan was not involved in the demonstrations.

Friday afternoon, the national police manager Abdul Karim told journalists that the authorities had for 20 days the seven police officers who were in the vehicle who struck Kurniawan for a break in ethics.

Kurniawan’s funerals were assisted by hundreds of motorcycle-collection drivers, who escorted his body at the burial location in a two-wheeler convoy through the center of Jakarta.

Jakarta Legal Aid urged the government to release 600 people who had been arrested during the demonstrations.
