Denmark ordered a ban on the flights of civilian drones on Sunday, after drones were observed in several military installations overnight, after a week during which drone outings caused temporary closings of several Danish airports.

The Danish army said in a statement that it had deployed “several capacities” in response to night observations at the bases, refusing other comments on the nature of its response.

Drone outings earlier this week forced Denmark to close airports, including a closure of almost four hours from Copenhagen Airport on Monday.

Denmark described drones to be part of a “hybrid attack”. He ceased to say definitively who, according to him, is responsible, but the Prime Minister puts Frederiksen suggested that this could be Moscow, calling Russia the “main country which constitutes a threat to European security”. The Kremlin denies blame.

This is the last activity of unexplained drones after several observations, including more than five Danish airports last week, which made concerns concerning security in Northern Europe in the midst of an increasing Russian aggression.

Danish officials say that a series of drone incursions they call hybrid attacks in airports have been carried out by “professional actors”, and some analysts point to Russia as a guilty. Russia has denied participation.

Under the ban, civilian drones will be prohibited from Danish airspace from Monday to Friday from the coming week, when Denmark, which holds the rotating presidency of the European Union for the second half of this year, will welcome European leaders.

“We are currently in a difficult security situation and we have to ensure the best possible working conditions for the armed forces and the police when they are responsible for security during the EU summit,” Defense Minister Lund Poulsen said on Sunday.

Denmark will welcome EU leaders on Wednesday, followed by a summit Thursday from the European political community of 47 members, created to unite the EU with other European friendly countries after the invasion of Ukraine in 2022 by Russia.

After a meeting of NATO in Riga, in Latvia, on Saturday, Colonel Martin O’Donnell, the spokesperson for the Supreme Headquarters of Allied Powers Europe, announced that “we will proceed with an even more improved vigilance with new multi-domain assets in the Baltic Sea region, which includes Denmark, under Baltic Sentry.”

He also said that NATO leaders were in constant contact with Danish officials following the drone’s observations.
