Eric Adams ends the re -election offer for the mayor of New York

New York mayor Eric Adams announced that he was putting an end to his candidacy for re -election, just five weeks before the voters went to the polls.
Adams said “speculation of constant media” on his future and the City Campaign Finance Board decision to refuse him counterparts, strangled his campaign.
Its withdrawal reduces the race to the Democrat Zohran Mamdani, former governor Andrew Cuomo and the republican candidate Curtis Sliwa.
Adams, elected in 2022 as a democrat, presented himself as independent after being charged with alleged corruption and fraud. The indictment was then rejected towards the Trump administration.
“I cannot continue my re -election campaign,” said Adams in a video published on social networks on Sunday.
“Constant media speculations on my future and the decision of the Campaign Finance Board to retain millions of dollars have undermined my ability to collect the funds necessary for a serious campaign.”
Adams did not approve any of his rivals in the race. But he made comments in his declaration of withdrawal which seemed to be directed to Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic candidate and the front of the race.
“Major change is welcome and necessary, but beware of those who claim the answer to destroy the very system that we have built together during generations,” he said without naming Mamdani, a self-written socialist. “It’s not a change, it’s chaos.”
Adams warned that “insidious forces” pushed “division agendas” in municipal policy.
Once considered a rising star in New York politics, the popularity of the former police officer has decreased due to allegations of corruption, tensions with democrats on immigration and frustration in the face of the cost of the city.
In an indictment last September, Adams would have accepted gifts totaling more than $ 100,000 (£ 75,000) from Turkish citizens in exchange for favors. He denied any reprehensible act and pleaded not guilty.
In April, the Ministry of Justice ordered the New York Federal Prosecutors to suppress the accusations. But the controversy continued to haunt Adams while hanging out in the race for re -election.
His relationship with the Democrats deteriorated during the Biden administration when he criticized his immigration strategy.
Earlier this year, he said he would present himself as an independent – a decision that spared him from the competitive democratic primary, which was won by Mamdani.
Adams will serve the rest of his mandate, which ends on January 1. Its name will remain on the ballot because the deadline to change it has passed.
