Fire rage in several European countries while the stifling heat continues
The firefighters of Spain, Portugal, Greece, Turkey and Balkans were fighting on Tuesday, with another heat wave pushing temperatures above 40 ° C in certain parts of Europe.
Climate warming gives the warmer Mediterranean region, dried summers, say scientists, with forest fires that are increasing each year and sometimes whipping themselves in “whirlwinds”.
“We are cooked alive, that cannot continue,” said a mayor in Portugal, Alexandre Favaios, while three fires were burning.
On the outskirts of the Spanish capital of Madrid, a fire killed a man working in a horse stable and reached certain houses and firm, but the regional authorities said it was contained on Tuesday.
A man also died in a fire in Albania, while a 61 -year -old Hungarian seasonal worker is suspected of having died of heat -related causes during the fruits in Lleida, in the eastern Eastern region.
In the mountainous region of Kuci in Montenegro, northeast of the capital Podgorica, an army soldier was killed and another seriously injured when an oil tanker was overthrown, said the Ministry of Defense.
At Tarifa, at the southernmost tip of the Iberian Peninsula, beach enthusiasts and the famous chef Jose Andres filmed flames and black smoke on the hills above the whitewashed villas.
More than 2,000 people were evacuated from there because the fire – supposed to have started in the eucalyptus and pine forests – spread, said officials. Helicopters have extinguished the fire of sea water.
The authorities of Albania, Montenegro, Germany, Spain, Italy and France have published various types of heat warnings.
In Spain, temperatures have reached 44 C in certain regions, according to the AEMET meteorology department, with minimum precipitation and winding conditions which should exacerbate the risk of fire.
Spanish soldiers intervene
The Ministry of the Interior of Spain has put the national services on standby, while nearly 1,000 members of the armed forces already support efforts to fight fire.
The country’s rail operator said the trains between northwest of Galicia and Madrid were interrupted because of a fire.
Strong temperatures across Spain have triggered several forest fires, including one near Las MEDULAS National Park. There, the firefighters were forced to retreat, after the conditions created fireballs and whirlwinds of fire. Hundreds of people in neighboring villages were forced to leave their homes.
In the largest region of Spain, Castille and Leon, more than 1,200 firefighters fought 32 forest fires on Tuesday and thousands of residents were invited to leave their homes.
Meanwhile, police said they had arrested a firefighter near the fortified city in Avila in the northwest of Madrid, after admitting to having started a fire two weeks ago due to the potential work income that it would take it to turn it off.
In northern Portugal, more than 1,300 firefighters supported by 16 planes fought against three large fires. One of them, in the real region of Vila, has been burning for 10 days.
“It has been 10 days since our population is panicked, without knowing when the fire will hit their door,” said Favaios, the local mayor, to the RTP diffuser, pleading for more government aid.
In Albania, expanses of forest and agricultural land were burned by forest fires last week, and 30 separate fires tied by strong winds continue to burn.
The Defense Ministry said four army helicopters and 80 soldiers helped firefighters. He also pointed out the death of a man suspected of having triggered a fire in his backyard who has spread in a larger area.
In the neighboring Montenegro, the authorities supported by Serbia and Croatia helicopters contained a forest fire on Tuesday near Podgorica, with the capital covered by smoke. In Gornja Vrbica, the residents helped the firefighters preventing a fire from reaching a local church and a cemetery, Pobjeda Daily reported.
More aid was expected from Austria, Slovenia and Italy under the EU civil protection mechanism.
Dragana Vukovic, whose house in the south-east of Piperi has been reduced in ruins, told Reuters: “Everything that can be paid and bought will be offset, but the memories that have burned in these four rooms and the attic cannot be offset.”
‘Uncontrollable’
In Greece, at the most southern point of Europe, forest fires in some cases stretched by winds of wind forced the evacuation of several villages and a hotel on the tourist islands of Zakynthos and Cephalonia in the Ionian Sea with four other parts of the continent.
A forest fire in the South Greek region of Achaia forced residents of five villages near an industrial area to flee, while 85 firefighters and 10 planes tried to prevent a fire from reaching houses near the West Greek city of Vonitsa.
The photo was similar in Türkiye, where a large fire in the northwest province of Canakkale burned for a second day, which aroused the evacuation of hundreds of residents.
