The first human case of a parasitic infestation eating flesh was confirmed in the United States, according to the authorities.

New World Warworm (NWS) myiosis was found in a patient who returned to the United States of Salvador, the Ministry of Health and Social Services announced on Monday. The case was confirmed on August 4.

NWS myasis is a parasitic infestation of fly larvae, or asticots, caused by parasitic flies.

The pest mainly affects livestock and that the authorities have declared that the risk to American public health was currently “very low”.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) worked with the Maryland health service to investigate the case.

HHS spokesperson Andrew Nixon said it was the first human case of Myiose NWS associated with the travels of a country affected by the epidemic identified in the United States.

The devastating pest, which feeds on living tissue, is generally found in South America and the Caribbean.

Despite efforts to stop its spread to the north, cases have now been confirmed in all Central America countries, including Mexico.

Humans, in particular those with an open wound, are sensitive to infestation and are more at risk if they go to the regions or if they are around livestock in rural areas where flies are, says the CDC.

The USDA animal and plant health and plant inspection service affirms that it has teamed up with other agricultural agencies, the State Department and the United Nations for the United Nations to respond to the epidemic.

“When the NWS steals larvae (asticots) dig into the flesh of a living animal, they cause serious, often fatal damage to the animal,” according to the USDA. “NW can infest cattle, pets, fauna, sometimes birds and, in rare cases, people.”

An epidemic of verses in livestock may have serious economic impacts, threatening more than $ 100 billion (73.9 billion pounds sterling) in the economic activity linked to the cattle and livestock industry, USDA said earlier this month.
