The 86 -year -old filmmaker was admitted to the Policylinico Tor Vergata, a public hospital in the Italian capital, reported the Ansa news agency.
According to the Italian media, the Repubblica, the director had to undergo a planned surgery, but before entering the operating room, he was hospitalized for atrial fibrillation.
A hospital spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comments sent by email.
