“ Friday 13 ‘Short’ Sweet Revenge ‘is a return of Jason Voorhees terribly funny

Last May, a new company called Horror Inc. announced the launch of “Jason Universe”, an initiative aimed at injecting a new life into the Friday 13 franchise. Although the company has contributed Crystal lakeThe next PEACOCK prequelle series, its first big launch is Sweet revengeA short film bringing the favorite hockey maniac preferred to kill.
After teasing the short circuit in San Diego Comic-Con (and reassuring fans of a feature film are certainly on the list of “tasks”), Horror Inc. presented it online. Io9 had the chance to speak to Sweet revenge Mike P. Nelson writer (Bad turn, deadly silent night) and ioannides ally star (In badlands) About the short circuit. We are entering the spoilers, so look at it before reading more!

Cheryl Eddy, io9: Sweet revenge Famous the 45th anniversary of the franchise and puts the new Jason Universe initiative at the forefront significantly. Have you received many instructions, notes or things to do or not to do? What did the process look like?
Mike P. Nelson: I think that’s what was so exciting to work with Sheri (Conn) and Robert (Barsamian) and Robbie (Barsamian); tHey were really open to hearing a new catch. And of course, there are always small things, especially with an IP is as tall as it, we want to assure ourselves and be faithful to certain things. But they were open to a new plug and a little a new twist. As long as we can bring back Jason as fierce as ever, to do things Jason is the great thing.
And then of course, it was cool that it is just as important for them as me, in fact, for 13 minutes, try to tell an interesting story and not only, “let’s just kill Jason as many people as possible.” I’m not going to say that people wouldn’t like it, but I just have the feeling that it would become a little tedious after a while. And my motto is always: it’s the heart. The heart is what makes horror great. It was an important aspect: telling a story that had heart and presenting a character whose people fall in love and can see a transformation.
Io9: If you pay special attention at the beginning, you will see clues that it is not a Friday 13 history. We have Eve who is called a “force of nature” which “did not fuel”. “Some people find that, sometimes this one finds you.” Eve takes a bite of an apple. Knowing that the film would be so short and that the fans would watch it more than once, have you pepper into things that people would only take the second time?
Nelson: A thousand percent, which makes me so happy that you have literally said all the good times. I just say to myself: “I hope people take all these little things that, I think, are important for her in history.” You said them all and it makes me very happy.

Io9: Eve is underwater for a long time before she returned. Should we assume that she dies at Crystal Lake and that Reborn with Jason powers?
Nelson: To a certain extent, yes. When I found this concept, the idea was that I did not care to see how Jason (suffered) his transformation. I love that we always keep it wrapped in mystery. There are always plots on what happened to him. Is it alive? Is it dead? Did he really drowns? Didn’t he drowns? And I think that is all great. Now, from my point of view, that’s how I see Jason: it is that he did Drunch, and he came back because there is nothing more powerful emotionally than a story on the return to take revenge.
And for me, it’s a very similar story with Eve. And Eve allowed me to explore how it could have happened for Jason. Each character is different, but being able to see what Eve passes was this kind of horror of the fun body – not quite what’s going on, why I feel that way, why I look like that, then realizing that there is something that brought him back. I mean, look, she is impaled by a machete. It does not come back at least that there is something else. So I think that keeping this – yes, there is an ambiguity, which all Jason’s films have, what I think is really important to have. But I also want to have this wink and a wink: “Did she go through the same thing as Jason did?” is definitely there.
Io9: Ally, what did you think when you heard of this project?
Ioannides ally: I was in shock, honestly, when Chad (Villella), the producer, called me and told me about that. Be invited to be a last girl in a Friday 13 The film is quite emblematic. I am always like, I cannot honestly believe it.
I went back and looked at the first four and I just tried to take everything and understand what is good on this subject and what people expect, because obviously it is such an emblematic franchise and people feel very special about this … I wanted to make sure I was doing everything I could to give people this same feeling.
Nelson: Ally for me was someone we could present as some someone who was almost the full opposite of Jason. She is in pink plaid, she almost looks like a combination of Annie and Tina to (Friday) The first part and the seventh part. It is sweet … but crazy shit is coming.
Jason is great, and he has this mass for him, and he is this force of nature. And Eve does not meet this way. We are told that it is, but she does not meet this way until you finally realize: “Oh, she East! “And so the opposite side of the spectrum, you see Eve and you see Jason;

IO9: How did you throw your Jason Voorhees? What type of direction have you given to shape these performances?
Nelson: It’s Schuyler White, and he is actually a waterfall coordinator. I worked with him on a few films before that, so he and I had a fairly good relationship … He has 6’5, he loves horror, and he excels in waterfalls in horror films and he understands the horror. He’s a big fan. He is the sweetest guy in the world, who does not necessarily lend himself to Jason on the surface. But I think that working with someone who understands and who just has a pure love of this character and loved and looked at his whole life, bringing him his own atmosphere and also this kind of wink and a nod to what Jason was, especially in these first four films, was huge. And he brought that. It was immediate.
We did not want to do the Jason in progress. We wanted to make sure it was the jason that will get you, no matter how fast it goes. And he is not in a hurry. The joke on the set was, there is almost an artistic talent in what Jason does in certain things of the short circuit, like his painting on the clothesline and the fact that he caught the slicer apple. It is not only a question of grasping a kitchen knife to pierce a bunch of holes in this woman on a table. He catches the apple-accident … something is happening up there that he wants to see some things happen while people experience pain while he murdered his victims, which, I think, was again a funny eye and a nod to the way he managed his victims in the past. Schuyler brought it and it was a joy to work with it. He just understood the work and did it in the best possible way.
Io9: it is the dream of the fan of ultimate horror that you were able to live, by making a Friday 13 Film and planning of an unleashing of Jason. First of all, Eve discovers all these corpses, and I say to myself, when will they actively show him people? Then, of course, we get there. How did you characterize all this?
Nelson: In the field, it was not only: “Let’s just see how many people Jason can leave for 13 minutes.” It was more, Eve goes through what she goes through, then (it’s almost like) she comes across crime scenes, like all these consequences, because it was something that has always been fun in the Friday 13 movies. You meet the corpses, and sometimes you did not even see the victims occurring on the screen … which always stuck me while watching these films, and therefore for me, it was somehow “and if instead of (Eve just) goes to the cabin after she left the lake, she had to go through the horror to testify of her handwork?”
Build this excitement, to your point: “Oh my God, when are we going to see it?” Having to see what he did during the film – that, for me, was fun. It was an exciting thing. And then, of course, when you see it for the first time, and then the absolute slaughter feast in the cabin, is our big highlight, you know what I mean? Our big Jason scene, where he simply goes to town, does not hold back. And we bring it back in force.

IO9: The short film has a suggestive but open end. What do you think about then?
Ioannides: I like the idea that there is a kind of kinship, a kind of knowledge. I think it’s more interesting than a simple fight. But who knows? I mean… proposition?
Io9: She already had the ring!
Nelson: I would agree with Ally. I think it puts in place this idea, what does Jason do when he realizes that there is someone else like him? What is this answer? Is the answer first, like: “I’m going to kill you because I don’t understand”? Is it: “Well, you are like me, maybe I need to go out”? There was always this kind of idea of, Eve does not want to do anything (with Jason) and Jason continues to follow her? Or is it the opposite?
I think there is a lot of fun having in a story like that because it does not ruin the mythology of what the Friday 13 The films are, because you still have Jason, you always have its past, you know where it comes from. It is crazy that his mother was murdered and died due to an accident because people were not paying attention. You always have it all. (This) does not rewrite anything. But what happens when someone else goes through a transformation similar to him and has to face this kind of body horror-and when it happens after that?
These are the questions that are fun to play. And I honestly love the idea that he is in fans and viewers afterwards, so that they can start talking about it. I think this is one of the most exciting things. Yes, I have my own ideas and what I would like to do afterwards and how it could end up going. But where does it take the spectator’s mind afterwards? For me, I think things become really exciting: where can it go?
