Funicular lisbon cable crash: Who are the victims?

Portugal is in mourning after at least 17 people died and around twenty others were injured when the famous railway of the Funicular cable from Lisbon derailed on Wednesday evening.
A transport worker was one of the people killed, while a three -year -old German boy would have escaped minor injuries.
The injuries include 11 foreign nationals from Germany, Spain, France, Italy, Switzerland, Canada, South Korea, Morocco and Cape Verde, according to the AFP press agency, citing emergency services.
The police have not yet confirmed the identity of those who died, but here is what we know of the victims.
Transport worker and German father among the dead
The Portuguese Transport Union Sitra said that André Jorge Gonçalves Marques, who worked as a funicular brake guard, was killed.
In a declaration on Facebook, the union wrote: “We send our condolences to the families and friends of the victims of the accident and wish them rapid recovery as well as the best recovery to the other injured in the accident.”
Some foreign nationals were also among those killed, emergency services said on Wednesday evening, but where they came from remaining uncertain.
Local media reports that a family of three German children were aboard the funicular when they crashed.
The father died on the scene, the mother was in critical condition in the hospital, and a three -year -old boy underwent a minor injury.
What we still don’t know
The Glória Funicular can transport around 40 passengers and is extremely popular with tourists – but it is also crucial for city residents, to help them travel from top to Lisbon hilly streets.
We do not know how many people were on board, nor the identity of all those who died. The number of deaths and the number of people injured could change in the coming hours.
We also do not know if British nationals are involved – the UK Foreign Office said it was aware of the incident and was ready to provide consular assistance to all affected British nationals.
