Georgia police faced anti -government demonstrators trying to ensure the presidential palace of the capital, Tbilissi.

The security forces have used water cannons and peppery gas to disperse the demonstrators.

The country of the Caucasus has been in crisis since the Georgian power party Dream Party won the victory in last year’s legislative elections, which, according to the pro-European opposition, was stolen. Since then, the government has taken a break for joining the EU.

The demonstration took place on the same day as the local elections, which the opposition will largely boycotted following a repression of the government. An organizer had previously called for the arrest of the leaders of the Georgian Dream Party.

Having the Georgian and EU flags, tens of thousands of demonstrators paraded in the center of Tbilisi on Saturday.

One of the organizers, the opera singer Paata Burchuladze, read a statement urging the employees of the Ministry of Internal Affairs to obey the will of the people and immediately stop six senior personalities of the Georgian Dream Party.

The demonstrators then walked on the presidential palace and tried to enter the complex, which prompted the anti-riot police to pull pepper gas.

The demonstration has followed a repression against activists, the independent media and the political opposition in recent months, most of the leaders of the pro-Western opposition now behind bars.
