Gunman sets fire to Michigan church while killing at least 1 person and injuring 9, said the police

Hundreds of people were inside the church of Jesus Christ last days in the canton of Big White when a 40-year-old man has drunk his vehicle in the front door, then left the vehicle and started to shoot, said police chief William Renye.

The suspect would have set fire to the church, said Renye. The flames and smoke could be seen for hours before the fire was turned off. The first speakers then pass through the wreckage.

“We believe that we will find additional victims once we have found the area where the fire was,” said Renye.

Scott Bennett, supervisor of the canton of Grand Blanc, said that the shot and fire are “a tragedy that nobody wants to meet”.

Police said they had no reason for fire or shots.

The church, surrounded by a parking lot and a large lawn, is located near the residential areas and a church of Jehovah’s Witnesses.

Michigan governor Gretchen Whitmer said in a statement that his heart breaks for the Grand Blanc community. “Violence everywhere in a place of worship is unacceptable,” she said.

The shooting occurred in the morning after Russell M. Nelson, the oldest president of the Church of Jesus Christ from the Latter-day Saints, died at 101. The next president of the faith, widely known as the Mormone Church, should be Dallin H. Oaks, by protocol of the Church.
