Reality TV star Heidi Monday opened to Us Weekly in an exclusive interview about what he took — and what he wants to keep — from moving wildfires to LA.
“I didn’t know what to do,” Mountains alum said Us Wednesday, January 15, about the moment he realized he and his family had escaped the out-of-control fire burning in Pacific Palisades. “Nothing could have prepared me for that … You can’t wrap your head around it. I just started picking things up – I wasn’t thinking about anything else.”
Heidi, 38, and her husband, Spencer Prattlost their home in a fire, according to an Instagram post shared by Spencer’s sister, Stephanie Pratton January 7. Heidi and Spencer, 41, share sons Gunnar, 7, and Ryker, 2.
Heidi revealed that out of fear, “children’s things” were the priority in her life.
“So I took their bears. By chance, from the tooth fairy, Gunner’s teeth that he left in my room, so I grabbed them,” he explained. “I took a few documents that we had – they were packed (some) years ago from the (back) fire. I took two pairs of jeans and two shirts. I took shoes – casual shoes.”
In the duo’s haste, they were forced to leave behind many cherished possessions – possessions that are now destroyed. One thing, Spencer explains, was a special Christmas present he convinced his wife to buy herself.
“He didn’t find himself,” he said Us. “Then, right before Christmas, he got himself a pair of Golden Goose shoes in Palisade Village. It was his biggest gift. I was like, ‘Just get your Golden Goose.’ He didn’t.
Heidi explained that she thought she would be able to “get back to them.”
“It hit me at the end of the pack so I couldn’t go back,” he added. “I was like, ‘Oh my god, I have to go into the kids room and I have to hold their teddy bears. And I had Gunner, he had a fever of 104 – he had it for days – and I was so busy with him…
In addition to her new shoes, Heidi said she wished she had captured the “pictures” she explained she could never get back.
“I don’t have any pictures,” he said. “I have all the pictures I made for rSpencer before there was Instagram and TikTok and the iPhone. These pictures (that) I won’t have anymore. All these things are gone, you know?”
So far, the Palisades, Eaton and other smaller fires have burned a combined 38,600 acres, according to NBC News. At least 27 people have died and 12,000 houses have been destroyed. Many famous people, including Mandy Moore, Milo Ventimiglia, Paris Hilton and Miles Tellertheir houses were destroyed by fire.
For Heidi and Spencer, it’s not the “things” they miss as much as their community.
“I miss our friends. I miss our daily life. I have to drop my son off at school there. I miss our whole country and I’m sad for all my friends, “he tells us through tears. “I’m sad for the people of our whole community. It’s not just our loss – it’s the real loss of our city; a village that we are all active with.”
He continued, “(It’s) the daily routine (that) you miss – waking up in your bed and your mirror and your pillows and the smell of your house and the kids. It’s really hard.
