Indian cinematographer Saif Ali Khan was stabbed after an altercation with an intruder early Thursday and underwent surgery at a hospital, media reports said.

The 54-year-old actor was taken to the hospital from his home in Mumbai, the country’s financial and entertainment capital, where he lives with his actress wife Kareena Kapoor and two sons.

Two of the six wounds were deep, one near the spine, the Press Trust of India said a doctor at Mumbai’s Lilavati Hospital.

Indian media reported that the police said the assailant entered the house at 2:30 am and fled after stabbing Khan. A woman worker at Khan’s house was also injured during the attack and is undergoing treatment, he said.

The police are investigating and have started a search for the person who committed the attack.

Kapoor, Khan’s wife, said in a statement that her family was fine and asked “the media and fans to be patient and not comment further because the police are already investigating.”

Khan, who is also a film producer, has featured in nearly 70 films and TV shows. He is the son of former Indian cricket great Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi and Bollywood actress Sharmila Tagore.

He has won several awards for his work in Hindi cinema, including seven Filmfare Awards. In 2010, he received the Padma Shri, India’s fourth highest award.
