Israel gave the final approval of a controversial regulation project in occupied West Bank which would effectively reduce the territory in two. Palestinians and rights defense groups say that he could destroy plans for a future Palestinian state.

The development of E1 stands, open grounds in the east of Jerusalem, has been being studied for more than two decades, but has been frozen due to American pressure during previous administrations.

On Wednesday, the project received the final approval of the Israeli government planning and construction committee after the last petitions against it were rejected on August 6. If the process moves quickly, infrastructure work could start in the coming months and the construction of houses could start in about a year.

The plan includes approximately 3,500 apartments to extend the Maale Adumim regulation, said the Minister of Far -Right Finance, Bezalel Smotrich, during a press conference on the site last Thursday. Smotrich has thrown approval as a response to Western countries which has announced its intention to recognize a Palestinian state in recent weeks.

“The Palestinian state is erased from the table not with slogans but with actions,” said Smotrich on Wednesday. “Each colony, each district, each accommodation is another nail in the coffin of this dangerous idea.”

The location of E1 is significant because it is one of the last geographic links between Ramallah, in the north of the West Bank, and Bethlehem in the south of the West Bank. The two cities are 22 kilometers away, but the Palestinians traveling between them must take a large detour and pass through several Israeli checkpoints, adding hours to the trip.

Peace Now, an organization that follows the expansion of regulations in the West Bank, called the E1 project “deadly for the future of Israel and for any chance of obtaining a peaceful solution to two states” which “guarantees many years of blood”.

Israel’s plans to extend the colonies are part of an increasingly difficult reality for the Palestinians in the occupied West Bank, because the attention of the world is focused on the war in Gaza. There was a marked increase in the attacks of the colonists against the Palestinians, the evictions of the Palestinian cities and the control points which suffocate freedom of movement, as well as several Palestinian attacks against the Israelis.

Cisjordanian sanctions

More than 700,000 Israelis now live in occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem, the territories captured by Israel in 1967 and sought by the Palestinians for a future state.

The international community considers massively the construction of Israeli colonies in these regions as illegal and an obstacle to peace. Israel says that the West Bank is disputed territory whose fate should be determined by negotiations.

The Israeli government is dominated by religious and ultra -nationalist politicians with close ties to the colonial movement. Smotrich, previously the head of the settlers of Brands and now Minister of Finance, obtained the authority of the cabinet on the settlement policies and promised to double the population of settlers in the West Bank.

Canada has expressed sanctions targeting certain Israeli settlers involved in violent acts and, with other Western countries, has targeted Smotrich and the Minister of National Security Itamar Ben-Gvir for what it has qualified as repeated incentives of violence against the Palestinians, drawing anchored responses from the Israeli government.

Earlier this summer, diplomats from several Western governments who condemned the Netanyahu government were criticized by Israeli soldiers during the city of Jenin of the West Bank. The FDIs claimed to have shot warning in the air after diplomats have moved away from a agreed route, although video sequences have shown that soldiers targeting their rifles in a horizontal direction.

Four staff of the Canada Embassy were among those who were forced to seek coverage. Prime Minister Mark Carney described the shooting as “totally unacceptable”.
